Days before the Calgary Stampede begins, the Alberta NDP said Monday it would introduce tip protection measures for workers, and over three years raise the province’s minimum wage to $18 an hour.
The NDP noted that Alberta is one of the few provinces that doesn’t have legislation to ensure workers in the service industry keep their tips, and promised to fix that if elected as the province’s next government. The next provincial election is scheduled for October 2027.
Alberta’s Official Opposition also proposes to immediately raise Alberta’s minimum wage to $16 an hour, followed by annual increases of $1 an hour in the next two years until it reaches $18 an hour, and then index the minimum wage to inflation.
