American Airlines Cancels 9 Boeing 777 Routes: See Affected Flights Now

The world’s largest airline by total number of flights and daily departures, American Airlines has cut a total of nine Boeing 777-200ER routes since January 2025, as the airline replaces a number of these services with the newer Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The routes affected are from key American hubs such as Miami International Airport (MIA), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that between January 2025 and October 2026, nine routes have been cut, with four of these being replaced with newer aircraft. Meanwhile, the others have been ended or are on a temporary basis only.

In January, oneworld member American Airlines made the call to cut three routes with the Boeing 777-200ER. The three services affected included Miami to Cancun International Airport (CUN), where the airline will no longer serve the route with this iconic widebody. This route will now be served with narrowbody aircraft within the airline’s fleet.

That same month, Miami to Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) has been shelved, leaving Air France as the only direct operator. Other nonstop flights are operated to the City of Love by French bee, which operates to Paris Orly (ORY).

The other notable mention actually occurred in January 2025, when the airline operated services between London Heathrow (LHR) and Las Vegas (LAS) for the Consumer Electronics Show. The carrier added these temporary flights due to a strong increase in travel demand between the two cities for the CES, where international tech executives, exhibitors, and other media attend. This event is now served with the 787-9.

In May of last year, American decided to call time on the 777-200ER flying between New York and Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). This saw the final flight with the 777 last May, as the airline shifted the route onto the 787-9. The airline regularly operates a once-daily flight to Rome, and faces direct competition from ITA Airways, Delta Air Lines and Norse Atlantic.

This March, the airline’s sole destination in New Zealand saw its Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Auckland Airport (AKL) service shift from the 777-200ER to the 787-8. This route is operated seasonally across the Northern Hemisphere winter season, providing a unique escape for travelers to the South Pacific for the Southern Hemisphere summer temperatures. Flights from New York to Cancun have also had an aircraft adjustment, with American shifting to narrowbody aircraft since April.

In June of 2025, American decided to change the aircraft operating between its home at Dallas/Fort Worth and Frankfurt Airport (FRA), adjusting the route from the 777-200ER to the 787-8. This route faces direct competition from Lufthansa, which operates the city pair up to six times a week.

In October last year, the airline also changed its New York to Rio de Janeiro/Galeão (GIG) service to the more modern Dreamliner. This route is operated seasonally by both American Airlines and Delta. The last route has been cut altogether, being that of Dallas/Fort Worth to Zurich Airport (ZRH). The airline had operated this through the summer season, before cutting the city pair in August. The route was served with the 777-200ER, and now leaves the route unserved.
