No More A-List: Southwest Airlines Announces Shake-Up To Loyalty Program

Southwest Airlines has announced a sweeping overhaul of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, eliminating its familiar A-List and A-List Preferred tiers in favor of a new three-level structure. Beginning January 1, 2027, members will qualify for Silver, Gold, or Platinum status, with the highest tier offering unlimited Companion Pass travel. The changes also introduce new ways to achieve elite status and additional rewards for frequent flyers.

The announcement represents another significant departure from Southwest’s traditionally straightforward loyalty program, following its introduction of assigned seating and decision to charge most passengers for checked baggage. Alongside the new status levels, Southwest is introducing milestone rewards, international airline redemptions, airport lounges, and improved inflight connectivity as it seeks to attract more lucrative travelers.

Starting in January 2027, Southwest’s existing A-List and A-List Preferred members will transition to Silver and Gold status, respectively, with a new Platinum levelabove both. The change replaces a two-tier elite structure with a more conventional hierarchy comparable to those operated by competing US airlines. Southwest says the new names will make progression through its loyalty program clearer and introduce additional incentives for its most frequent customers.

CNBC reported that the new structure offers increasingly generous benefits, particularly regarding checked baggage, premium seating, and bonus points. Silver members will receive one free checked bag and a 40% earning bonus, while Gold offers two bags and a 60% bonus. Platinum provides three free checked bags, complimentary Extra Legroom seating at booking (when available), and a 120% points bonus. Existing benefits such as same-day standby, priority airport lanes, and dedicated telephone support remain included as important elements of elite membership.

The most significant addition is Platinum’s unlimited Companion Pass, allowing members to designate another passenger to accompany them on eligible Southwest-operated flights, paying only applicable taxes and fees. Although Companion Pass has long been one of Southwest’s most attractive rewards, linking it directly to the highest elite tier fundamentally changes how passengers qualify.

Southwest Vice President of Rapid Rewards Nandika Suri said the changes balance more meaningful rewards with the program’s simplicity.

“Rapid Rewards was built on a simple idea: make it easy to earn and use rewards. Our members have told us they want Rapid Rewards to reward them in more meaningful ways, whether they’re working toward status or using the points they’ve earned. These updates build on that feedback by rewarding members throughout their Southwest experience, while keeping the simplicity and value that has always set our program apart.”

What The Changes Mean For Southwest’s Frequent Flyers

For existing members, the new qualification requirements produce both winners and losers. Silver will require 25 one-way flights, up from 20 for A-List, while Gold will require 50, up from A-List Preferred’s 40. However, Silver’s 35,000-point requirement remains unchanged, and Gold’s falls from 70,000 to 65,000. Platinum requires 100 flights or 140,000 tier-qualifying points. Higher flight thresholds could make status harder to achieve for passengers who qualify mainly through frequent, relatively inexpensive journeys.

The changes also redistribute earning benefits. Silver’s 40% points bonus improves upon A-List’s current 25%, but Gold members will earn just 60%, a substantial reduction from A-List Preferred’s 100%. Reaching Platinum restores and exceeds that benefit at 120%, although qualification is considerably more demanding. NerdWallet notes another potentially unpopular change: eliminating credit card welcome bonuses as a way to qualify for Companion Pass, removing a route customers used to get the benefit without extensive flying.

Southwest is simultaneously making elite qualification more accessible through everyday spending via its co-branded credit cards. From January 2027, all Rapid Rewards Chase credit cards, including the entry-level Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card, will earn one tier-qualifying point per dollar spent on eligible purchases. Previously, qualifying points were awarded in blocks of between 1,500 and 2,500 per $5,000, depending on the card. New milestone rewards will also recognize customers before they achieve Silver, offering points or seat certificates, while members progressing between Gold and Platinum can qualify for three Companion Pass trips.

The program will also become substantially more useful beyond Southwest’s own aircraft. From spring 2027, passengers will be able to earn and redeem points through international loyalty partnerships with Icelandair, China Airlines, and Etihad Airways, opening destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Members will also be able to redeem points for rental cars beginning in November, followed later in 2027 by Preferred and Extra Legroom seats. This represents an important evolution from Rapid Rewards’ historically airline-focused redemption model.

Southwest’s Loyalty Overhaul Reflects Its Premium Transformation

The Rapid Rewards overhaul is the latest step in Southwest’s massive premium transformation. Perhaps the most surprising announcement is its entry into the airport lounge market. Its new Southwest Icon Lounge network, developed in partnership with Chase, will debut at Nashville International Airport (BNA) in late 2027. Access will be provided through a new premium Rapid Rewards credit card scheduled to launch in 2027.

Southwest is also introducing Starlink connectivity across its fleet, targeting completion in fall 2027, with complimentary WiFi remaining available to Rapid Rewards members. These investments follow the airline’s controversial decision to introduce assigned seating and more premium seats, alongside baggage fees and revised fare bundles. The transformation accelerated amid pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which pushed Southwest to improve financial performance and reconsider elements of its traditional business model.

The broader question is whether Southwest can successfully draw higher-spending passengers away from competitors like Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, without alienating the loyal customers who have long valued its simplicity. Southwest is treading a fine line, and a simultaneous shake-up of Rapid Rewards could either create new opportunities to deepen customer relationships or further frustrate existing frequent flyers. But having already abandoned several longstanding differentiators, Southwest is plunging ahead, and betting that a more sophisticated loyalty program will help it compete more effectively for premium revenue.
