This past summer, I became the proud owner of a 250-pound mattress. A PlushBeds Royal Bliss Luxury Mattress in medium firmness, to be exact — a hand-tufted king-size bed that costs roughly 25 times what I spent on my trusty IKEA foam mattress that carried me through my twenties and into my thirties.

My tour of the PlushBeds factory
Before the Royal Bliss ever arrived at my door, I had the opportunity to visit the PlushBeds factory in Camarillo, California. I’ve now toured factories for six different mattress brands, and PlushBeds stood out immediately. This is a hands-on operation; the factory is organized, methodical, and filled with piles of natural fabrics, specialized tools, and test stations.

Founder and CMO Michael Hughes walked me through the floor and told me the story behind the Royal Bliss — and it’s surprisingly similar to a tech startup origin story. PlushBeds wanted to recreate a specific European mattress-making technique that uses hand-stitched calico coils (where each steel coil is sewn into its pocket rather than heat-sealed or glued). The problem? The machines that do this work are no longer manufactured.
So PlushBeds found a retired European mattress maker who had operated these machines in the past, brought him out of retirement, and collaborated with a Japanese company to engineer a custom machine from scratch. They tested prototypes in a garage in the UK — a la Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak — then shipped the finished machine to California and brought the European craftsman to the U.S. to help set it up and train the team.
The result is a proprietary piece of equipment that sits on the factory floor, where mattress-makers craft each Royal Bliss by hand (and to order). What makes this mattress so expensive?
I want to note again: This mattress is not cheap. But, as I was touring the factory and learning more about the legacy of European mattress makers, it started to make a little more sense.

My order went into production on May 20 and arrived by June 16 — faster than most furniture I’ve ordered (aside from IKEA, hah!). For this mattress, PlushBeds estimates delivery within a couple of weeks from the time of your order.

Once it was finally on my bed frame, I was genuinely surprised by how well it fit. This mattress sits flush to the corners of my Avocado bed frame — no gaps at all. The warranty covers lifetime protection against material or workmanship defects for as long as you own the mattress. This is more robust than most market competitors, though it’s always worth reading the fine print, especially if you move often or may want to resell later.
That brings us to care — how can you reasonably make sure your mattress is in tip-top shape for its entire life?
