Pakistan in West Indies 2026, WI vs PAK 1st Test Match Report, July 25 – 29, 2026

Pakistan 28 for 3 (Babar 16*, Rizwan 1*, Seales 2-4) and 282 trail West Indies 282 (Shamar 38, Abbas 5-22) and 311 (Hope 92, Hodge 84, Abbas 4-50) by 183 runs

The first Test between West Indies and Pakistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba finally moved off the knife-edge it was perched upon the past few days, swinging the hosts’ way violently. The first session on day four was a tug of war for territory with neither side able to budge the other off its position.
West Indies added a further 55 runs with their last three as Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach led the hosts past a target of 200. Roach and Seales followed up by plunging a dagger into Pakistan’s top order with three cheap wickets, leaving Pakistan 183 shy of the target with seven wickets in hand. Just as concerningly, Shan Masood, who scored a hundred in the first innings, did not come out to bat after picking up a finger injury in the field yesterday.

The day began with a wayward over from Mohammad Ali and equally lacklustre keeping from Mohammad Rizwan, with four byes and a dropped catch by the keeper getting the hosts a bonus eight runs to kick things off. The first half hour saw run-scoring come to both batters easily, with Shamar continuing his belligerence, a straight six off Khurram Shahzad perhaps the shot of the day.

By the time a slower ball from Mohammad Ali pierced his defences, the partnership had added 61. The last two wickets kept chipping away with a cluster of useful runs, adding another 27 before Mohammad Abbas returned to clean up the tail, and pick up a richly deserved 5-wicket haul in the process.

But if West Indies felt they had won that first hour, things were about to get exponentially better. Roach and Seales were accurate with their lines right from the outset, and when one jagged back into Imam-ul-Haq, it took his gloves with it en route to the keeper. Azan Awais did not last much longer with Seales lulling him into an expansive drive and producing enough sideways movement to draw an edge. He saved his best delivery for Salman Agha, though, nipping it in sharply from over the wicket and stealing past the inside edge to ram into the front pad on middle stump.

Masood, meanwhile, remained unavailable to bat in the first session, the extent of his finger injury unclear. It is understood he will bat if required. For now, though, it was Babar Azam and Rizwan left to survive what was left before lunch as a target of 211 looks further than ever away.
