The real killer is the amount of land renewables would require to meet Ontario’s power needs. As an example, Ontario plans to build a new nuclear plant in Port Hope. The site would occupy five square kilometres. To generate the same 10,000 megawatts as the nuclear plant by using solar would require 500 square kilometres. Wind would take five times as much land as solar, the government says.
