The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today participated, on behalf of Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, an important format for supporting Ukraine’s security now and in the future.

The meeting was co-chaired by Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, and Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, and other key European leaders were also in attendance.

The members of the Coalition acknowledged the momentum in the discussions between representatives of the United States, Ukraine and Europe toward a negotiated settlement. They discussed the importance of continued efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Leaders underscored the importance of continued support for Ukraine, including through robust, reliable security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any negotiated settlement. They also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities to ensure the country can protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Minister Anand affirmed Canada’s steadfast commitment to the Coalition and its readiness to continue contributing to Ukraine’s security and the success of a sustainable peace process.
