Today, the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Anita Orbán, Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the margins of the Pathways to Peace: Second International Conference on Returning Ukrainian Children, Detained Civilians, and Prisoners of War, held in Toronto on September 28 and 29, 2026.
The ministers reaffirmed their strong support for Ukraine and exchanged on the importance of sustaining this support in the face of Russia’s continued illegal aggression. The two ministers underscored the importance of securing the return of deported Ukrainian children, unlawfully detained civilians and prisoners of war as part of efforts to advance a just and durable peace.
The ministers exchanged views on security, transatlantic cooperation and current geopolitical developments. As NATO Allies, Canada and Hungary highlighted the importance of cooperation and Minister Anand welcomed and expressed strong support for Hungary’s renewed commitment to the EU and NATO.
The ministers also discussed bilateral relations, including opportunities to strengthen trade and investment and people-to-people ties. Minister Anand underscored the importance of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and encouraged Hungary to consider full ratification. The ministers exchanged on the strong historical foundations of the Canada-Hungary relationship, including the significant Hungarian-Canadian community and the enduring ties forged following Canada’s resettlement of more than 37,000 Hungarian refugees after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
The ministers highlighted the importance of continuing dialogue between Canada and Hungary and their commitment to expanding cooperation on regional security, economic prosperity and other shared international priorities.
