It’s often hard to pivot to something new that could unlock a new chapter of growth — especially when you are still an all-star on the playing field.

It’s a pivot Olympic snowboarding champion Scotty James, 31, is wrestling with. He’s still at the top of his sport and getting ready for at least one more Olympic Games.

“I think even for me, every day has been a challenge in the sense of changing the narrative … I’m still very ambitious on the mountain. I still want to win,” James said in a new episode of the Power Players With Brian Sozzi podcast (see video above; listen below).

“And then teaching myself to open my eyes up and broaden the horizon in the sense of what’s actually possible as an athlete, not just in the halfpipe, but also from a business perspective,” he added.

In 2023, James invested in the X Games, the famed sports action league that includes BMX and snowboarding competitions. This winter, James surpassed Shaun White for the most all-time X Games SuperPipe podium finishes (with eight gold medals, two silvers, and one bronze).

“That [investment’s] been closest to me because it’s the world that I’m still living in now,” James said. “I’m still competing in it, and I’m getting information off the mountain and bringing it back to the business. And it’s been a really amazing learning curve.  I hope I’m adding value to that company as well as we grow it moving forward.”

The Australian made his debut on the international stage at just 14 years old, and he has spent the last decade and a half disrupting the snowboarding hierarchy.

Following his massive performance at the Milano-Cortina Games, James cemented his status as Australia’s most decorated Winter Olympian of all time with three medals.

Despite his budding business career, James says he’s laser-focused on the 2030 Winter Olympics.

“I’ve been able to win three medals, none of which are gold yet,” he said. “In 2030, I think I will have learned many valuable lessons through my experience that can get the job done.”
