Hayden Panettiere Dies at 36: Looking Back at Her Big Fashion Moments

Fans and friends mourned the unexpected death of “Heroes” and “Nashville” actress Hayden Panettiere Monday.

Her connection to fashion and beauty included starring roles in campaigns for Neutrogena and the shoe brand Candies, and Panettiere also attended fashion week several times throughout her career, made her mark at the Met Gala and was a guest judge on “Project Runway.”

The 36-year-old was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest by first responders and emergency medical services, after a 911 call was placed Sunday afternoon to the Greenville, S.C., residence where she was staying.  While police officials continue to investigate the actress’ death, the autopsy has been completed but the results are pending. Although there were no signs of trauma that would have contributed to the death, the cause and manner are still uncertain, according to Sharon Craver, a spokesperson for the Greenville County coroner’s office. (The results could take up to three months.)

Panettiere detailed her challenges with addiction, postpartum depression, domestic abuse and the loss of her 28-year-old brother Jansen in her memoir, “This is Me: A Reckoning,” which was released in May by Grand Central Publishing.

During the height of her TV fame on “Heroes” and then “Nashville,” the actress periodically turned up in the front row at runway shows for Tommy Hilfiger, Anna Sui, Dennis Basso and Vivienne Tam during New York Fashion Week. Basso, who dressed Panettiere for the 2014 Met Gala, said Monday, “She often came to my fashion shows and she was lovely to work with.”

The “Scream VI” actress also previously had a yearslong deal with Neutrogena. Clips have resurfaced about her parting with the brand. Neutrogena did not respond to comment requests on Monday.

She also modeled for the affordable shoe brand Candie’s in two campaigns in 2008. Four years later, the Californian served as a guest judge on an episode of “Project Runway” that called for designers to compete in a “Women on the Go” design challenge that was suggested by Michael Kors. Panettiere gamely offered critiques and praise for contestants. The following year, appearing in a Cotton Inc.’s “The Fabric of Our Lives” campaign, she showed off different sides of her own lifestyle — choosing an outfit in her walk-in closet, having fun at a nightclub, shopping at a shoe store, and walking her dog.

The blond-haired, green-eyed talent was also seen in European designer labels like Giorgio Armani. Panettiere opted for a red Saint Laurent double-breasted dress with  black platform pumps, a crystal-embellished evening bag and gold drop earrings on the red carpet at amfAR’s annual gala in Los Angeles in 2022.

With dyed pink hair at that time, the actress explained to IRK in the “Phoenix Rising” interview that she always loved color, especially bright colors. She also told the magazine that growing up, she was “constantly” told how she should dress and what she should look like. “My ‘style’ was practically decided for me.”

Diminutive at 5’2″, the actress told IRK, “I love to find pieces of clothing that I can wear and that don’t wear me,” adding that McQueen designs probably made her feel the most powerful. Partial to being comfortable when “lounging at home,” Panettiere, who has a daughter Kaya with her former fiance Wladimir Klitschko, said she favored soft sweats from Aviator Nation.

Photographer Ben Cope, who worked with her on a few shoots, described Panettiere Monday “as super sweet,” and recalled how much her publicist Kasey Kitchen loved her. He said of the actress, “She came on set and was professional and personable. It was just like hanging out with a friend. We just had fun. She was easy to work with.”

Recalling the IRK shoot, Cope said, “She was down to try everything on to see what worked. We kind of got weird with it. I was playing with different [vibrant Dan Flavin-type] lights and she was up for experimenting.”
