
The United States Air Force is pouring more concrete, steel, and taxpayer money into its bases right now than at any point since the Cold War, and the bill across just five installations already tops $19 billion. This list ranks those five reconstruction efforts by the size of the investment attached to each one, running from a $409 million jungle-clearing job in the Mariana Islands up to an $8 billion air defense shield on Guam.
The ranking is built strictly around confirmed or credibly reported construction dollar figures, drawn from Air Force program documents, congressional testimony, and reporting from various sources. Four of the five bases are on US soil; the fifth pairing, Guam and the neighboring island of Tinian, anchors the Pacific side of the ledger. North Field, Tinian — Reclaiming A WWII Airfield From The Jungle
A $409 million bet on dispersal, not firepower
North Field launched the Boeing B-29 Superfortresses that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, then sat abandoned under a jungle canopy for nearly 80 years. The US military has relaunched construction here to create what commanders call a “power projection platform” just 118 miles (190 km) from Guam, giving Pacific Air Forces somewhere to disperse aircraft that isn’t Andersen Air Force Base.
The $409 million, five-year project has already cleared hundreds of acres of vegetation from four historic 8,500-foot (2,591 meters) runways and milled the old pavement ahead of repaving, which began in early 2026. At 8,500 feet, each of those runways would still rank among the longest in the country, on par with entries in Simple Flying’s rundown of the five largest US military airfields by runway length. The work falls under Agile Combat Employment (ACE) doctrine, which spreads aircraft, fuel, and crews across small, austere fields instead of concentrating them on a handful of large ones.
Ranking fifth isn’t a knock on Tinian’s strategic value — a Newsweek report frames the airfield’s revival as insurance against losing access to Andersen AFB entirely in wartime, but its price tag is a fraction of what the other four bases on this list are absorbing, reflecting a site built for dispersal rather than for firepower. Stars and Stripes has reported that Pacific Air Forces commander Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach personally directed the jungle-clearing push, while The Air Current notes the airfield is now expected to handle its first flight operations on a firm timeline for the first time since the project began. There is no plan to permanently station a combat wing here; the runway exists so aircraft based elsewhere have somewhere to land if their home field is struck first.
Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota — Standing Up The First B-21 Raider Base
A $2 billion head start ahead of the 2027 Raider arrival
Ellsworth, home to the 28th Bomb Wing’s Rockwell B-1 Lancers, has been selected as the Air Force’s first Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider main operating base and formal training unit. The roughly $2 billion construction program is designed to let the base keep flying the B-1B while simultaneously standing up an entirely new maintenance system for a stealth bomber that has barely entered public service.
In late June 2026, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink toured the base to formally accept its first two finished B-21 buildings: a $161 million Low Observable Restoration Facility built specifically to preserve the bomber’s radar-absorbent coatings, and an $81 million wash rack and general maintenance hangar. “Taking ownership of these facilities is a step toward fielding advanced capabilities at scale,” Meink said during the visit, according to an Air Force release.
Air & Space Forces Magazine reports the service is accelerating the broader B-21 test and delivery schedule, with the first Raider expected on Ellsworth’s ramp in 2027 and the base doubling as the Formal Training Unit that will qualify every B-21 crew and maintainer the service produces.

RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom — America’s Nuclear Mission Returns To Europe

RAF Lakenheath is the single largest recipient of a reported $4.2 billion Air Force investment spread across three UK bases, Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Fairford, with roughly $1.6 billion of that earmarked for Lakenheath alone. Home to the 48th Fighter Wing’s F-15E Strike Eagles and F-35A Lightning IIs, the Suffolk base is being rebuilt around a mission the Pentagon still won’t officially name.
According to the Federation of American Scientists, construction there includes a $104 million hardened Primary Command Post and a $149 million Defender Operations Compound, both tied to what the Air Force calls its nuclear “surety” mission: the infrastructure needed to store, guard, and control B61-series gravity bombs. Neither Washington nor London confirms or denies weapons at any specific site, but The Aviationist and The War Zone have both reported evidence pointing to US nuclear weapons returning to UK soil for the first time since 2008.
RAF Mildenhall and RAF Fairford are receiving roughly $1.1 billion and a smaller remaining share, respectively, but Lakenheath’s money is going toward the kind of hardened, single-purpose buildings that simply don’t get built for a fighter wing that’s just flying more sorties, which is precisely the point. About 6,000 American personnel are stationed at the base today, and the new command post is designed to replace a facility built in 1979 that officials say no longer meets the demands of a base juggling F-15E, F-35A, and now nuclear-adjacent missions at once.
Tyndall AFB, Florida — Building The “Installation Of The Future” From Scratch
A $5 billion rebuild after Hurricane Michael, anchored by the F-35A
Hurricane Michael’s 155 mph (249 km/h) sustained winds all but leveled Tyndall Air Force Base in October 2018, destroying or damaging 484 buildings. Rather than patch the damage, the Air Force chose to rebuild the entire base from a blank slate, branding it the “Installation of the Future” and reassigning its mission from training Lockheed MartinF-22 Raptor students to flying operational F-35A Lightning IIs.
The roughly $5 billion effort, split across a dozen construction zones, includes a $3 billion Natural Disaster Recovery Program covering more than 120 facilities, plus a single $604 million contract, the largest military construction award in Air Force history, for 11 F-35 flight-line buildings. Every new structure is engineered to withstand winds of at least 165 mph (266 km/h), and a concrete stormwater tunnel 7 feet (2.1 meters) high and 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide now runs beneath the flight line to keep it from flooding.
According to Engineering News-Record, base officials expect Tyndall to become “a highly sought-after assignment” once construction wraps, a rare case of an installation emerging from a natural disaster with sharply better infrastructure than it had before Michael made landfall. DVIDS coverage from the US Army Corps of Engineers and Air & Space Forces Magazine both note that the first F-35As began arriving in August 2023 while hangars were still under construction, forcing maintainers to work out of temporary office space; the 325th Fighter Wing is slated to operate 78 of the jets once every zone of the rebuild is finished.
Andersen AFB, Guam — An $8 Billion Shield With No Bunkers
The single largest base rebuild on this list, and the most debated
Andersen AFB is absorbing the largest reconstruction bill of any base on this list: an $8 billion Enhanced Integrated Air and Missile Defense System, known as the Guam Defense System, built around 16 separate interceptor and radar sites spread across the island to create a 360-degree shield against ballistic, cruise, and hypersonic threats.
As Simple Flying has reported, the Air Force is simultaneously pouring 20 acres (eight hectares) of new concrete apron at Andersen to disperse aircraft, alongside a $211 million communications center contract and a separate $2 billion program re-engining the
BoeingB-52H into the B-52J. What the base is pointedly not getting, despite the scale of the spending, is a single-hardened aircraft shelter.
According to The National Interest, Pentagon planners view wide-open aprons, not bunkers, as the better bet for surviving a missile barrage, since dispersing jets across dozens of parking spots forces an adversary to spend far more missiles than concrete ever costs to pour. Aerospace Global News reports the same construction wave is funding new communications infrastructure and, per Air & Space Forces Magazine, a long-overdue overhaul of run-down dormitories for the additional troops the buildup will bring.
