GreedFall: The Dying World studio Spiders is reportedly closing its doors

Less than two months after narrative-driven RPG sequel GreedFall: The Dying World left early access, its developer, Spiders, is reportedly being shut down. It’s claimed the Paris-based studio is being liquidated after parent company Nacon failed to find a buyer.

French site Origami first shared news, citing “several sources close to the matter” and claiming the liquidation request was a “mere formality at this stage”. Spiders – the studio behind Steelrising and The Technomancer, but best known for the GreedFall series in recent years – was intended to be sold following the announcement Nacon was filing for insolvency in late February, but “no offer was made to acquire this veteran of European AA video games”.

According to Origami, one of the studio’s two projects – said to be a “licensed game codenamed Dark” – was cancelled last year, “after which Spiders focused its efforts on the final stretch of GreedFall 2’s production and developing a new pitch to secure its future”. The studio’s regular activity only stopped a few days ago according to the site’s sources. “CV updates and self-study sessions have replaced work on future productions,” Origami wrote.

Eurogamer’s review of the first GreedFall, released in 2019, was positive, highlighting the way it “makes up for its faults with a lot of spirit.” And it proved successful enough, selling 2m copies, that a sequel was announced in 2022.
