Germany’s Dirtiest Coal-Fired Power Plants Are Back in Profit


Despite the expansion of renewables, Germany still relies on fossil fuels when demand is high or renewable output is weak. During a cold snap that’s expected to last until the end of the month, traditional power plants met nearly half of the electricity demand on Wednesday morning, according to Fraunhofer. On days with strong renewable generation, that share can fall to around 20% in winter.
