Delta Air Lines’ New SkyMiles Rules Even Punish Its Top-Tier Diamond Medallion Members


As a whole, the story of frequent flyer programs in the US over the past decade has involved devaluations, a focus on credit cards, and boosting revenue. Loyalty programs were originally a means for airlines to differentiate themselves, but carriers have turned them into profit centers and are looking to boost engagement while improving the margins of the operation of these programs.

While there are some positive changes that have happened for consumers, headlines have focused on new rules and policies that have hurt the value of these programs for their members. Delta SkyMiles is the world’s largest and most profitable loyalty program. It’s valued at $31.7 billion, and Delta Air Lines earns more revenue from SkyMiles than it does from ticket sales.

However, it’s hardly the most lucrative loyalty program in the world for passengers, and Delta has unveiled another set of changes earlier in 2026. Some of these changes involve boosting the value of certain perks, but Delta has also pulled back the value of another perk.

The Latest Changes To Delta SkyMiles

As of February 1, 2026, Delta has changed the value of four Choice Benefits offered to SkyMiles members. The American Express statement credit, which is available to Platinum Medallion and Diamond Medallion members who hold the SkyMiles Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve, or Reserve Business Amex cards, who could previously opt for a $400 or $700 credit. Now, however, the statement credit has been cut to $250 for Platinum Medallion members and $500 for Diamond Medallion members.

The changes made in February, however, were not all bad news. While the value of the statement credit benefit has been cut, SkyMiles has also boosted the value of three other Choice Benefits. Platinum and Diamond Medallion members can now gift status to four friends or relatives rather than two (Silver for Platinum and Gold for Diamond), while the bonus miles benefit has been boosted to 35,000 miles for Platinum Medallion members and 40,000 miles for Diamond Medallion members.

In addition, the travel voucher benefit is now worth $350 and $550, respectively. Reportedly, the Amex statement credit benefit was quite popular, and the Amex statement credit for Diamond Medallion members in particular effectively offset the price of a yearly SkyClub membership.

It was one of Delta’s most lucrative perks, and the carrier, aiming to boost its margins, decided to scale back the benefit. Delta is boosting the value of those three benefits to push members into selecting those instead and also to shift focus away from the change towards the statement credit benefit.

The Choice Benefits For Top SkyMiles Members

One of the major benefits of reaching top-tier status with Delta SkyMiles is Choice Benefits. This is available to Platinum Medallion members, who may select one benefit per year, as well as to Diamond Medallion members, who may select three benefits. There are ten benefits available to Platinum members.

These include the statement credit, bonus miles, status gift, and travel voucher, as well as 6,000 Starbucks Reward Stars, a $1,000 MQD accelerator, a $250 SAF contribution, four Regional upgrade certificates, $400 in Delta Vacation savings, and a $1,500 Wheels Up credit. Diamond members receive access to all of the same benefits, except that the Wheels Up credit is boosted to $2,000, the MQD accelerator is boosted to $2,000 MQDs.

Furthermore, the Delta Vacation savings are boosted to $500, while Diamond Medallion members can also choose between four Global upgrade certificates, eight Regional, or two Global and four Regional certificates. In addition, Diamond Medallion members also receive access to a SkyClub Individual membership (which uses two Choice Benefits) or a SkyClub Executive membership (which uses three Choice Benefits).

Delta offers the most amount of customization to its elite members, but AAdvantage and MileagePlus also offer similar benefits to their top members. American offers Loyalty Point Rewards for earning a specific number of Loyalty Points in a given year (rather than giving awards purely based on status, while United Airlines gives benefits for earning elite status and PlusPoints to Premier Platinum and 1K members. PlusPoints can be used for upgrades to premium cabins on United and partner airline flights.

SkyMiles is the world’s largest and most profitable frequent flyer program. Delta is extremely good at earning revenue from the program, but it doesn’t always provide excellent value to its members. Generally, SkyMiles succeeds because of Delta’s brand and its partnership with American Express. Some debate the true merit of Delta’s brand image, but the carrier is generally considered to offer an elevated experience over competitors, while American Express also has a premium brand image.

In addition to the airline’s brand, Delta also has strong positions in several wealthy cities, such as New York, Boston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. These are prime markets for credit card spending, and Delta earns huge revenue from selling millions of miles to American Express at nearly no cost. While Delta also sells miles to other partners, American Express is by far its largest, and it’s in Delta’s interests to keep spending high.

Delta miles are generally valued at 1.1 to 1.2 cents per mile, lower than AAdvantage or MileagePlus miles. However, SkyMiles members don’t join because they’re looking for the best overall value proposition; they join because they want to maximize their value from flying with Delta. Many SkyMiles members don’t even fly Delta very often, but they do earn rewards from using their Amex cards and then use miles or benefits on the occasion that they do travel with Delta.

How To Make The Most Of SkyMiles

All SkyMiles members receive miles when flying with Delta, and these miles never expire. In addition, SkyMiles members receive complimentary access to in-flight Wi-Fi. However, the best way to maximize the value of the program is by signing up for a co-branded Amex card and by earning elite status. There are seven co-branded Amex cards, four personal and three business cards, along with four Medallion tiers in addition to the invite-only Delta360 status.

The Delta SkyMiles Blue is the entry-level Amex card with no annual fee and limited rewards. The Gold card has a $150 annual fee, while the Platinum card has a $350 annual fee. Meanwhile, the top-level Reserve Amex card has a $650 annual fee, and it includes benefits such as 15 complimentary SkyClub visits and two free checked bags on domestic flights (along with one free checked bag on international routes).

In addition, the Reserve card gives $560 in various statement credits and access to the Centurion Lounge when flying with Delta. The four Medallion tiers are meant to progressively reward SkyMiles members for their continued loyalty, although the benefits are not the strongest.

All members are placed on an upgrade list for domestic flights, although upgrades are far from guaranteed. The Choice Benefits are only available to Platinum and Diamond Medallion members, while these members also receive complimentary access to Delta Comfort seating. In addition, the tiers come with higher mileage earnings and reciprocal SkyTeam status.

What does this mean for the oneworld carrier’s passengers?

AAdvantage, SkyMiles, and MileagePlus are all revenue-based programs, which means that members earn miles based on how much they spend with the airline or within the loyalty program’s ecosystem rather than on how often they fly or how many miles they fly. Some airlines still operate with segment or distance-based programs, but revenue-based systems are more lucrative for the carrier, and credit card programs have become vital to the financial success of loyalty programs.

American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines all lose money from flying passengers, but Delta and United are two of the most profitable airlines in the world through their loyalty programs. These airlines have strong brands with high demand for their miles, and this means that credit card partners need to buy more miles from the airline. Recognizing this, United Airlines updated its earnings chart earlier in 2026 to give cardholders higher mileage earnings than non-cardholders, and it’s likely that competitors will follow.

With these changes and with cardholders also being given access to additional saver awards, United Airlines has made the biggest move to push credit card signups that we’ve seen yet. For MileagePlus members, abstaining from a credit card leaves a lot of value on the table, and this will significantly increase credit card signups, further increasing the numbers that United sells to its partners. In turn, United’s profits will rise even more.
