Air Advisor has released its airport rankings for 2026. The firm conducted extensive research into travel patterns and preferences to rank 23 of the world’s most used airports. London Heathrow Airport (LHR) came out on top. Dublin Airport (DAA) and Tenerife South Airport (TFS) are second and third. European hubs claim eight of the top ten spots.

This is a counter-intuitive story. Passengers love to complain about London Heathrow. However, its position owes to its impressive capacity and on-time departure rate, with punctuality receiving 40% of the scoring weight. No other airport in the world can deliver such a high volume of passengers to their destination on time.

What Metrics Did Air Advisor Use?

Naming the best airport in the world, and deciding which airports to include in the discussion, is inherently subjective. Air Advisor has put together a number of categories with different weighting to provide a degree of objectivity. It starts with the top 23 airports by US and United Kingdom passenger use. “If British and North American passengers rarely visit these airports, why include them?” it writes.

Punctuality, the percentage of flights departing on time, and the average Google review score out of five stars each had the highest weighting at 40%. The remaining 20% was split over four categories. Transport cost (8%) was the average expenditure on a transfer to the nearest city. Shopping experience (5%) was the average Google review star rating for airport shops. Average transfer distance accounted for 4%. Finally, Skytrax’s rating out of five was worth 3%.

Examining these metrics more closely, Air Advisor hopes to capture a holistic perspective, placing a high weight on Google reviews. Then, to zoom in on each factor, the highest weighting is, by far, for punctuality. Air Advisor has stripped airports down to their core function, getting customers from A to B as quickly and smoothly as possible in a decision that is both utilitarian and refreshing.

The Full Air Advisor Ranking

Air Advisor places London Heathrow and Dublinat the top of their ranking, with an incredibly close final score that is taken by London Heathrow due to its marginally better punctuality. London Heathrow only has the third-best punctuality, falling behind Los Angeles International and Bordeaux Merignac. However, the French airport is let down by horrific Google reviews, while LAX performs poorly in the minor categories. At the bottom are Manchester Airport and Paris Charles de Gaulle, both of which have horrendous punctuality and Google reviews.

There is a great deal of variation compared to other times when Air Advisor has completed its rankings. Compared to 2023, Madrid-Barajas and Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos dropped nine and eight places. Meanwhile, Tenerife South rose seven places and Dublin Airport climbed six places.

What Makes Heathrow So Good

Heathrow looks good here, partly because of the metrics Air Advisor has chosen. The hub dealt with an incredible 84.5 million passengers in 2025 and achieved a 79.14% punctuality rate. That is significantly higher than the average on-time departure rate across the 23 airports of 74.04%. Athens, 2023’s winner of the Air Advisor rankings, dropped to ninth place due to a collapse of its punctuality to just five points.

In Q3 2025, Heathrow’s media center reported that it had become Europe’s most punctual. The table below shows some of the punctuality and passenger number statistics raised in that press release:

Heathrow also performs well in one of Air Advisor’s minor rankings. It shares the top spot for shopping experience with Rome Fiumicino. However, it lost points due to mediocre scores for transfer cost, transfer distance, and Skytrax score.

Airlines Are Also Buying Into Heathrow’s Strengths

Heathrow doesn’t just perform well for passengers. It is also popular among airlines serving Europe’s busiest airport. One sign of this is the destinations constantly oversubscribed for slots, with airlines flying as much as they can from the airport. Carriers often use the largest aircraft at their disposal to maximize the capacity of their arrivals and departures into Heathrow.

Simple Flying’s James Pearson recently reported on Qatar Airways doubling its Airbus A380 winter schedule between Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) and London Heathrow. The Middle Eastern airline had previously planned to halve this schedule from October 25, but made a U-turn on the idea. The new frequency will be up to twice daily. That will boost service frequency across all airlines, airports, and planes between London and Doha to up to 12 times daily. Winter 2026/2027 will be heaven for avgeeks based near London Heathrow. There will be six airlines flying the A380 from London Heathrow: British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qantas, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines. Combined, these carriers will average 20 daily departures with the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

Recent Extreme Weather Has Threatened Heathrow’s Punctuality

This summer has seen Britain’s capital hit with brutal heatwaves. In June, the heat turned into storms. 900 flights were disrupted at Heathrow and Gatwick due to the extreme weather, with 474 impacted at Heathrow. The previous weekend had seen temperatures in Suffolk reach 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37.3 degrees Celsius).

UK air traffic control service, NATS, released the following statement: “To ensure the safety of the travelling public, aircraft need to avoid affected areas and be spaced further apart, which limits the number of flights that can operate safely.”

The disruptions included cancellations which left passengers stranded both abroad and in the UK. British Airways made several adjustments to its Sunday schedule to deal with the backlog from the previous day. However, passengers’ ability to claim compensation was hampered because air traffic control imposed restrictions that caused the disruption. As a result, passengers couldn’t claim EC 261 compensation from the airlines because the delays and cancellations were beyond their control.

London Heathrow Is Moving With The Times

Much of the reason Heathrow manages to process so many passengers with such punctuality is its incredibly tight noise regulations. Heathrow is strictly capped at 480,000 aircraft movements. The airport also has a finite noise budget to use when flying between the late evening and early morning (11:30 PM to 6:00 AM).

Each aircraftis assigned a Quota Count (QC) value based on its certified noise performance during takeoff and landing. Modern, quiet aircraft have a lower QC count and take less of a chunk out of the total noise Heathrow is allowed to produce. Heathrow has now reached a point where 80% of the aircraft using the facility meet ICAO Chapter 14 noise standards. These aircraft must produce at least seven decibels less than the previous Chapter 4 standard.

Prioritizing airlines that use the most modern aircraft has allowed Heathrow to push the boundaries of these rules. The Airbus A350 is a standout performer, producing up to nine decibels less noise than its widebody rivals, Simple Flying’s Josh Eyre reports. As sound levels multiply, a nine-decibel drop accounts for an almost 90% reduction in the total physical noise. A relatively low decibel decline in modern aircraft actually produces far less disruptive aviation.
