Brother of Calais Campbell charged with murder after mother’s death

The brother of long-time NFL veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell was booked Wednesday on charges of murder after their mother’s death, jail records show.

Ciarre Campbell, 41, was booked at Fulton County Jail early Wednesday. He was charged with aggravated assault, murder and possession of a firearm or knife.

Ciarre’s arrest comes hours after the Campbell family put out a statement confirming the death of their mother.

That statement read:

“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”

Lt. Christapher Butler said police received a welfare call from a concerned family member, per WSB-TV in Atlanta. When police arrived they found Nateal Campbell dead. Butler did not reveal who made the phone call to phone. Nateal was 71.

Butler added that police have received calls about this location in the past, per WSB-TV.

“A brief look into the history does show some calls back in April dealing with this location a possible arson incident,” Butler said. “There have been some indications of possible some mental health issues with an individual.”

Calais, 39, is about to enter his 19th season in the NFL. The veteran has emerged as one of the best defensive lineman of his era after being selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the NFL Draft.

In addition to all of Calais’ on-field awards — which include an All-Pro nod, six Pro Bowl appearances and a spot on the NFL 2010s All-Decade team — he was also named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019.

After spending the 2025 NFL season with the Arizona Cardinals, Calais signed with the Baltimore Ravens in May. It will be his second stint with the franchise.
