Boeing’s Hidden Update: 777X Gets Massive Range Increase

Boeing appears to have updated the publicly available range figures for its forthcoming series of 777X widebody twinjets. Indeed, the figures for both the 777-8 and 777-9 models are now more than 700 NM (1 NM = 1.85 km) higher than those that had previously been listed by the planemaker. The figures for the smaller 777-8 model, in particular, see Boeing narrow the gap to the Airbus A350-1000ULR.

Even before the updates were made, the Boeing 777X series represented a considerable step forward in terms of range when compared to its main predecessors: the 777-200LR for the 777-8 and the 777-300ER for the 777-9. With airlines and their passengers favoring the direct connectivity of nonstop ultra-long-haul flights, these increased range figures will certainly make the 777X worth the wait.

A quick look at Boeing’s website currently shows that, when it comes to the 777X series, the smaller 777-8 model is advertised as having a long range of up to 9,500 NM, with the larger 777-9 able to fly for up to 8,000 NM at a time. However, an eagle-eyed Reddit user shared a post yesterday noting that these figures were only recently updated, as confirmed by changes shown on Wayback Machine.

Indeed, the site’s archives show that, at least as recently as June 17, 2026, the 777-8 and 777-9 models were respectively advertised as having ranges of 8,745 and 7,285 NM. As such, the new figures represent respective increases of 755 and 715 NM, or, proportionally, 8.6% and 9.8%. The two-class capacity figures have also changed, from 395 to 350-425 for the 777-8 and 426 to 375-450 for the 777-9.

Simple Flying has reached out to Boeing for further information on this matter. We will update our coverage upon receiving a comment or statement from the manufacturer.

How Does The Boeing 777X Compare To Its Predecessors?

The two variants of the 777X series are proportionally similar to the Boeing 777-200LR and 777-300ER models, allowing for greater continuity among operators of the 777-8 and 777-9 respectively. Indeed, both models from both generations have a 64.8-meter wingspan, although those from the 777X series benefit from folding wingtips that, when extended inflight, increase this figure to 71.8 meters.

When it comes to range, the Boeing 777-200LR was already a legend of the long-haul game, having been an early pioneer of the ultra-long-haul flights that have become increasingly common in recent years. However, based on the updated figures, its successor, the new 777-8, will be able to fly almost 1,000 NM further than the 777-200LR’s advertised range of 8,555 NM, as well as carrying more guests.

This is due to the 777-8 being slightly longer than the 777-200LR, at 70.9 meters compared to 63.7 meters. Likewise, the Boeing 777-9 outstretches the 777-300ER, measuring 76.7 meters from nose to tail (compared to 73.9 for the latter). It also now represents a strong step up in terms of range: the 777-300ER can fly for up to 7,370 NM nonstop, while, as noted, the 777-9’s range figure is now 8,000 NM.

Closing The Gap To The Airbus A350-1000ULR

An interesting side note from these developments is that the 777X series has now closed the gap on the Airbus A350-100ULR, which the Australian carrier has selected for its ‘Project Sunrise’ nonstop flights from Eastern Australia to London and the US East Coast. Indeed, this model is advertised as having a range of nearly 10,000 NM, with Airbus adding 1,000 NM compared to the normal A350-1000.

The first A350-1000ULR set off on its maiden test flight from Toulouse Blagnac Airport (TLS) in southwestern France on June 2. Airbus explained that its increased range was “made possible primarily by the integration into the aircraft structure of an additional rear center tank.” As such, it will be interesting to see if Boeing discloses if any modifications were needed to boost the 777-8’s range to 9,500 NM.
