Alberta working to evacuate remaining campers from drenched Kananaskis Country

KANANASKIS — Crews in Alberta are working out plans to evacuate less than a dozen campers who remain tucked away at sites in Kananaskis Country.

More than 100 kilometres of roads in provincial parks along Alberta’s Rocky Mountains were closed because of landslides and flooding.

Parks Alberta Minister Todd Loewen says some sections have reopened but highway contractors are still clearing debris and restoring access in the area.

Loewen earlier said that about 50 people were sheltering in place in the region, which remains under a local state of emergency.

Communities across Alberta have been hammered by rain in recent days, and there’s a flood warning for the Elbow River, which flows from Kananaskis Country east into Calgary.

Canmore has rescinded its local state of emergency but is keeping a high streamflow advisory in place to warn those in the town to stay away from embankments.

“Road conditions have been restored in various areas across Kananaskis country and many of those who were unable have now been able to leave,” Loewen said in a social media post Tuesday.

“There are also some individuals and groups who have chosen to stay, and continue with their plans to enjoy Alberta’s K-Country.”
