Advisory Committee on Canada U.S. Economic Relations meets following the intention of the U.S. to impose new 50% tariffs on a number of Canadian goods

Today, members of the Advisory Committee on Canada–U.S. Economic Relations met to discuss the United States administration’s intention to impose a new 50 per cent tariff on a number of Canadian goods.

The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy, Canada’s Chief Trade Negotiator to the United States, the Honourable Janice Charette, and Canada’s Ambassador to the United States, Mark Wiseman, provided an update on recent developments with the United States, and reaffirmed the Government of Canada’s commitment to defending Canadian workers, farmers, businesses and families.

Minister LeBlanc reiterated that Canada has put forward detailed and comprehensive proposals to resolve trade disputes and modernize CUSMA. He indicated that discussions between Canada and the United States are expected to continue and deepen over the coming weeks and underscored that Canada remains prepared to engage intensively to find solutions that benefit workers, farmers, businesses and families in both countries.

Committee members discussed how these tariffs would impact key sectors and explored how Canada should respond to advance Canada’s interests.

Minister LeBlanc also emphasized that Canada will continue to work closely with provinces and territories, industry, labour and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated Team Canada approach. As discussions continue at this week’s First Ministers’ Meeting in Charlottetown, the focus remains on working together to protect Canada’s interests.
