A Look At The Salaries Of Long-Haul Flight Attendants In 2026


Flight attendants are one of the largest work groups at any airline, and they’re the face of an airline once onboard. While cabin crew are legally required to be onboard for safety reasons, passengers typically see them performing service duties, which can positively or negatively reflect on the quality of an airline’s onboard offering. However, with hundreds of passengers onboard, the job of a flight attendant can be extremely demanding, and they’re hardly the best-paid employees within an airline’s workforce.

Flight attendants are paid most similarly to pilots, who are the only other employees that directly work onboard a moving aircraft. Pilots, of course, receive far higher compensation rates, given the higher skillset required for their job and the training required, whereas the role of a flight attendant is more similar to that of a service/hospitality worker, but with added safety responsibilities. With that said, while flight attendant salaries can be modest, the career can be lucrative depending on the employer and your time with the company.

The Pay Structure For A Flight Attendant

The largest salary component for a flight attendant at most major airlines (including all Part 121 scheduled airlines in the US) is the base hourly rate. Like pilots, flight attendants are paid an hourly rate, which increases with seniority. In the US, however, flight attendant pay generally does not change with aircraft type, and the hourly rate is instead tied solely to your time with the company. This is because, unlike pilots who are only qualified on one type of aircraft, flight attendants are generally trained to operate on every type within an airline’s fleet.

In addition to the base pay rate, flight attendants are also paid per diem. This is also an hourly rate, and it’s meant to help cover living expenses while on layovers, calculated based on the number of hours that a flight attendant is away from their base. It’s specifically intended to be a reimbursement for living expenses, and is not taxable for trips that include an overnight. In addition, if you spend less than what you earn from per diem on a trip, you keep the remaining amount. Airlines usually assign different per diem rates depending on the location of the layover.

In addition to these, you also have to consider the opportunity for trips paid at premium rates (typically at 150%), and that some airlines pay a reduced rate for work performed during boarding, since the full hourly rate is only calculated when the doors are closed. Furthermore, flight attendants are usually assigned either a ‘line’ or a reserve schedule. A line includes scheduled trips for an entire month, with a line value of 65 to 90 hours. A reserve schedule means that you’re on call for a month and are paid at least a minimum guarantee (70-76 hours).

The ‘big three’ in the US are American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. While their networks are primarily domestic, they also operate some of the world’s largest long-haul widebody fleets. Pay rates and structure are generally the same across the big three, but Delta is unique in that its flight attendants are not unionized. Meanwhile, American flight attendants are represented by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, whereas United’s are represented by the Association of Flight Attendants.

Generally, top pay rates are reached after either 12 or 13 years with the company, and starting salaries are between $25 to $40 per hour. They rise every year until reaching well over $80 per hour, with union contracts also stipulating small increases to the rates every year. In addition, the three airlines pay one per diem rate for domestic trips, typically between $2 to $2.50 per hour, and a slightly higher rate for international trips, closer to $3 per hour.

In addition to the standard positions, the big three also have a ‘lead’ flight attendant on narrowbody flights, while international widebody flights are also staffed with a purser (also the case for some domestic widebody operations). The purser position pays more than a lead position and requires special qualifications. Flight attendants also have opportunities to pick up trips for premium pay, though not all positions may earn extra pay depending on whether the flight is domestic or international and on aircraft type.

The Importance Of Seniority In This Profession

A flight attendant starting out with one of the three legacy carriers will likely be earning under $40,000 per year, while an experienced flight attendant can bring home over $100,000 per year with premium trips. However, you first need to gain experience at other airlines, including US regional carriers, which pay even less. Once at the legacies, your seniority number dictates not just your pay, but also your base and schedule. The schedule is the major point of interest.

This includes whether you have a line or reserve schedule, days off, what trips you’ll fly if you hold a line, as well as the ability to pick up trips at premium rates. Trips involving long-haul flights are far more desirable, since the fewer number of flights means less time on the ground for reduced or no pay and therefore more money in your pocket. As US airlines comparatively operate many more short-haul flights compared to European airlines, it takes much more time for a US flight attendant to be able to regularly operate long-haul flights.

Because long-haul trips are more pay-efficient than short-haul trips, senior flight attendants can make significantly more money and also work fewer days in a given month. In addition, unlike in many jurisdictions, the US does not have a mandatory retirement age for cabin crew members, meaning that flight attendants can end up working long careers. Bette Nash, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 88, holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest-serving flight attendant, having worked for over 64 years.

The Role Of Unions In The Profession

The aviation industry as a whole is heavily unionized, with flight attendants being one of the most unionized work groups in the industry. Cabin crew members at almost every large Western airline are represented by unions, with little exception. In the US, Delta Air Lines is the big exception, but the presence of unionized labor groups at American and United essentially forces Delta to offer competitive or superior pay and working conditions to its flight attendants.

Unlike pilots and mechanics, the barrier to entry for cabin crew is quite low, which means there’s essentially always a high supply of aspiring applicants. At the same time, the job of a flight attendant can be extremely demanding, and it’s in an airline’s best interests to keep cabin crews happy to ensure good service. This can create significant tension between flight attendant unions and companies, since airlines also want to keep labor costs as low as possible.

United Airlines flight attendants just came to an agreement with their company on a new contract, after years of tense negotiations, making United the last of the three US legacy carriers to ratify a new flight attendant contract. Air Canada flight attendants ratified a new contract in 2025 after striking, with a key point of negotiation being pay while boarding. Meanwhile, on April 15 and 16, Lufthansa flight attendants went on strike, demanding higher pay, inflation bonuses, better working conditions, and better rest.

Similarities To Pilot Pay & Schedules

Pilot pay at most airlines is structured very similarly to that of flight attendants. Just like cabin crew, flight crew members are paid an hourly rate, which is determined primarily by years of service, but also depends on aircraft type since pilots only hold one type rating at a time. Pay rates vary dramatically between different types, with widebodies paying 50% or more than a narrowbody. Within a given type, however, there can still be some variance: US airlines usually pay pilots more for operating an Airbus A321 over an A320.

Just like with flight attendants, pilots also receive per diem and have opportunities to pick up premium flying. In addition, pilots can also bid to become a captain, although this is a permanent change that requires pilots to bid back to a first officer position if they want to, whereas qualified flight attendants can switch between the standard and purser positions in between trips. For pilots, their bid category (consisting of base, aircraft, and position) is determined by overall seniority, while schedules are determined by relative seniority.

Pilots tend to have shorter trips than flight attendants and are only paid when the aircraft is moving. Pilots at almost all large scheduled carriers are represented by unions, with the Air Line Pilots Association being by far the largest. Because of the high skillset and expensive training, pilots receive far higher salaries than flight attendants, with starting hourly rates at the legacy carriers exceeding $100 per hour. Top pay rates for widebody captains, meanwhile, can exceed $450 per hour.
