American Airlines’ New Nonstop Chicago-Tokyo Flights To Commence A Week Earlier Than Planned

American Airlines is set to bring forward its flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) by a week, with the new launch date now set for March 19. The move will bring the service date forward, showing strong demand for the hotly anticipated service. The new flights are replacing the Japan Airlines (JAL) nonstop flights, which are set to be shelved from March 27.

For oneworld carrier American, this marks a return to the airport pair after a seven-year hiatus, and the route will complement the airline’s existing service at Narita, where it maintains multiple weekly flights. These are the only two routes that American operates to Narita, Tokyo’s busiest international airport, and second busiest overall after Haneda.

With the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operating the service, this will be the standard 787-9 configuration (not Premium heavy with Flagship Suites), meaning that the service will offer 30 Flagship business, 21 Premium Economy, 34 Main Cabin Extra, and 200 in Main Cabin. The route is expected to be popular not only for point-to-point travel, but timed to coincide with a number of convenient onward connections with alliance partner JAL.

Between American and JAL, both airlines have a deep Pacific Joint Business agreement that supports coordinated operations and enhances transpacific service. This means Americans enjoy reciprocal frequent flyer benefits when traveling on the Japanese flag carrier. American CEO Robert Isom spoke about the new route back in July.

“American is proud to mark a new chapter in travel from Chicago with service to Tokyo. Built on the strong foundation of our 100-year history in Chicago and an incredible partnership with Japan Airlines, this new service is a testament to our continued commitment to make our hub stronger, broaden choices for customers and keep Chicago competitive on the world stage.”

As previously mentioned, the flight times have been planned to coincide with convenient connections at both ends of the flight: a lunchtime departure from Chicago has passengers able to connect from various domestic and short-haul services across the airline’s network into Chicago, and a mid-afternoon arrival to Tokyo the next day ensures passengers can connect easily into late afternoon and evening services from Narita.

Return services depart Tokyo early evening for the overnight service to Chicago, giving travelers a full day in Tokyo or plenty of time to connect from other international or domestic services. The mid-afternoon arrival in Chicago allows passengers to connect seamlessly to other domestic or international services. Full schedule below:

At this time, it remains unclear if American is considering additional flights to Tokyo Narita from other AA hubs; however, as suggested by Flights In Asia, Los Angeles or Phoenix direct to Tokyo Narita could be next. American already maintains regular flights from Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and New York-JFK to Tokyo Haneda.

Passengers onboard have four classes of service, with universal AC power outlets and USB-A ports at every seat. Individual touchscreen monitors provide access to hundreds of movies, television shows, and games, while high-speed satellite WiFi remains available to purchase. Dimmable windows and higher cabin humidity create a comfortable environment, with altitude pressurization proven to reduce the effects of jet lag.

Those in Flagship Business enjoy 30 seats in a 1-2-1 reverse herringbone configuration, while Premium economy are seated in a 2-3-2 configuration with up to 38 inches of seat pitch, with a dedicated footrest. Main Cabin Extra guests have up to 35 inches of seat pitch, while Main Cabin passengers enjoy a seat with around 31 inches of pitch.

With American’s return to flights between Chicago and Narita, the airline will face stiff competition from Star Alliance partners All Nippon Airways (ANA) and United Airlines, which both are present on the route with multiple weekly flights.
