The summer of 2026 at
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is shaping up to be a strong season of international travel. New routes featuring new planes for long-haul journeys around the globe are pushing block times to nearly 18 hours long.
Delta Air Lines officially returned to
Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) this month after seven years. Meanwhile, international carriers like Qantas are changing up the fleet with Airbus A380 superjumbo service to Melbourne ending in favor of new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner service as demand for premium flying products continues to climb.
The Dichotomy of Ultra-Long-Haul from Los Angeles
LAX is an anomaly among the busiest airports in the US because it hosts the highest volume of origins and destinations (O&D) flights with far fewer stopovers. There is a distinct split in the destinations that make the top ten list for the longest journeys originating from LAX. Delta’s return to Hong Kong is a reflection of the dominance of the Asia Pacific market. However, flights to Dubai International (DXB) as well as Doha Airport (DOH) in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, respectively, are also among the longest and most popular international flights from LAX.
At the top of the list is Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), which remains a popular destination for tourists despite business traffic remaining lower than the historical highs before COVID-19. This air itinerary remains the longest route out of Southern California with a maximum block time of 17 hours and 40 minutes. While SQ flies the premium heavy Airbus A350-900ULR during the winter because of high winds, in the summer, the standard variant of the widebody will be flying to accommodate higher passenger demand.
Emirates has been cutting back on the destination roster for its Airbus A380 superjumbos, but LAX will continue to be served by the colossal double-decker on the 16-hour and 20-minute route. These aircraft are also being upgraded with more premium cabin interiors to maintain the airline’s famously high standard of service. Qatar Airways is expected to operate Airbus A350-1000 wide-body jets to LAX this summer, featuring its luxurious Q Suite business class as well as Starlink Wi-Fi to ensure customer satisfaction on the flight that can take up to 16 hours and 10 minutes.
The Longest of Long-Hauls on the West Coast
The second longest itinerary available is operated by Sichuan Airlines to Tianfu International (TFU), which enjoys nearly 100% utilization fueled by visitors to friends and relatives in Chengdu, China. The carrier operates A350-900 Xtra Wide Body jets to serve the dense route that can last 16 hours and 20 minutes from takeoff to touchdown. These ‘VFR’ routes drive demand for many of the longest routes out of LAX to Asia and the Middle East.
There are three airports in mainland China that make this top 10 list for longest block times, as shown below, which are largely driven by surging summer travel. Although the market has softened since COVID-19 and recovery has been somewhat hampered by geopolitical events in the years that followed, demand continues to exceed on virtually every route.
Max Block Time (July 2026 Onwards) | Distance | Direction Of Route With That Time | Airlines |

Operators in the Middle East have been adaptable with their fleet to accommodate the changing volume of flyers from winter to summer. On the other hand, capacity restrictions at airports in China have forced a rigid system that does not flex to meet the summer VFR surge. While the flight times are similar, Emirates and Qatar both fly much higher capacity aircraft than the Chinese carriers operating to and from LAX.
Delta Relaunches Hong Kong Service
The return of Delta flights from LAX to Hong Kong marks a major milestone in the global recovery of long-haul commercial air traffic. HKG is a major hub for both business flyers and the tech industry to and from the US and China as well as VFR flyers and tourists to the historic city. Delta has invested billions of dollars in its operations at LAX over the past few years in advance of the 2028 Olympics coming to LA, with the same upgrades making renewed service to HKG more efficient for the airline as well as being easier and more enjoyable for customers.
The route is also noteworthy for its high volume of air freight as it ranks one of the most popular in the world for this service. Delta is flying the premiumized A350-900, that features over enclosed Delta One Suites, as well as a very large belly hold. Thanks to the features of the aircraft, this dual-prong strategy will maximize two of the highest margin markets for the route and security carriers’ reentry with a strong financial performance.
