American Airlines has announced that it will join a growing list of US employers that will match contributions to Trump Accounts. 1.4 million children have already been signed up for Trump Accounts will see $1,000 in seed money from the US Treasury, and now American employees will see the airline match $1,000 as a one-off payment to the children’s account.
50 companies across the country have already committed to the Trump Accounts program, which has been created under the OBBBA (One Big Beautiful Bill Act) that sees US Citizen children who were born between January 1 last year, and up until December 2028, receive a $1,000 contribution which will be a managed fund through low cost mutual funds, and cannot be withdrawn until they turn 18, when this would convert to retirement accounts (IRA).
$1,000 American Airlines Contribution To Trump Accounts
American joins other major US companies like Goldman Sachs, which have also confirmed they will match the seed contribution from the government, and the encouragement by national companies to support the initiative will see children build a steady investment that can be withdrawn once they become 18, or be invested into future retirement plans.
These 530A accounts are tax-deferred and can have parents contribute up to $5,000 each year until the beneficiary turns 18, and saw the proposal by the Treasury Department to regulate how employees will fund the Trump accounts with pre-tax dollars within their paycheck. American will proceed with paycheck deductions next year once the rules are confirmed. American Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom shared the following statement with CNBC:
“At American Airlines, our purpose is to care for people on life’s journey, and that includes helping our team members build a strong financial future for themselves and their families.”
Up To $2,500 Of Pretax Earnings
As outlined in the report by CNBC, American will allow eligible employees to contribute up to $2,500 of pretax earnings to the Trump Account from next year, and this investment that matches the federal contribution can then be additionally topped up to $2,500 to ensure continued investment into the children’s accounts. It is expected that around a third of American’s 140,000 strong workforce will be eligible for the pre-tax contribution option.
The Trump Accounts are positioned as just one of several tax-advantaged savings initiatives that are available for children, and with the commitment from both the Treasury and now American, financial experts have strongly recommended enrolling eligible children, as this ultimately means free money from both parties, and a jump-start to savings which will be accessed when 18 or utilized for retirement plans.
Parents and legal guardians are encouraged to set up the accounts by filling out IRS Form 4547 or through the Trump Accounts Platform. Any child who is under the age of 18 can set up a Trump Account; however, only newborns after January 1, 2025, are eligible for the $1,000 government grant.
Benefits And Eligibility For Trump Accounts
As described on the Trumpaccounts.gov website, the fund promises long-term financial security for millions of US children. The Treasury’s $1,000 grant remains fully in the children’s name, and parents or caregivers are the only custodians of the funds until they turn 18. While no further contribution is mandatory, to maximize return on investment, it is encouraged to add up to $5,000 per year. Additional contributions are easy with either recurring payments or the ability to pay one-off deposits with participating payment cards right on the platform.
Those who have opened accounts can download apps on the Google Play or Apple App Store and review balances and returns, and also have intuitive forecasts. Those with multiple children can review accounts side by side.
President Trump described the program as a ‘pro-family initiative that will help millions of Americans harness the strength of our economy to lift the next generation. And they’ll really be getting a big jump on life.’ The Trump Accounts program is also backed by leading companies including Dell, Uber, Mastercard, Visa, State Street, Comcast, Chipotle, and Robin Hood. American is the latest company to commit to matching the $1,000 seed funding.
