I’ve researched, worn, and reviewed dozens of organic cotton and bamboo socks — these are the best, comfy, and sustainable options for any budget.

I live in the mountains of Colorado, where we experience all four seasons, which means socks are an important part of life. Each year, my family refreshes our sock collection because we wear them so much. With regular socks, I find that they can develop holes after just a few wears or can be a bit scratchy, especially if they are made with artificial fabrics. Instead, we shop for comfy and conscious natural socks to keep our toes happy and our skin soothed.

Whether it’s cozy wool socks for winter or thin cotton socks for summer, I love how socks can elevate an outfit with a little pop of color or an unexpected pattern. In the summer, I wear them with sneakers and hiking boots, so I always need lightweight pairs on hand. In the winter, I live in socks, both for staying cozy around the house and wearing with boots. They take a beating with all that wear, so I’m always looking for pairs that will last more than a season — which means materials and craft are important, too! Even for socks, the smallest element in your wardrobe.

Why consider organic cotton or bamboo socks?

I recommend organic socks because of their sustainability, environmental, and ethical features (as well as the health benefits). Organic materials such as organic cotton support sustainable agriculture, as they are farmed using methods that have minimal impact on our ecosystems, compared to conventional fabrics. This includes crop rotation practices, which help improve soil health, and water conservation practices to help prevent water waste. Organic cotton is also biodegradable, which helps fight pollution! Organic cotton producers also support socially responsible labor practices, meaning each purchase supports the ethical and fair treatment of garment workers.

It’s also important to note that because socks are in close contact with our skin, going for an organic fabric with fewer chemicals can prevent irritation — and also keep our feet dry/most comfortable, especially since bamboo is super breathable. Moreover, it’s soft and just feels great on our feet!

Our criteria & methodology:

The socks below are the best on the market for quality, fit, and fabrics. Once you’ve experienced organic cotton and merino wool socks, you’ll never go back. This list includes a wide variety of styles and weights, each offering something different depending on the season or the outfit. I tested them with boots, flats, clogs, and, of course, sneakers, and wore them while lounging around the house. With the chilly months of fall and winter approaching, I’ve started thinking about the socks I’ll reach for daily during boot season. Between kids and pets, my socks get plenty of wear, even on days spent indoors. I paid attention to how each pair held up after a full day and again after washing. Durability is a must for me: I need socks that can handle lots of wear without my big toe making its way out of a hole.

We update this list regularly with our emerging favorites that meet the following criteria:

  • ORGANIC/NATURAL MATERIALS | The brands below carry organic cotton and bamboo socks that are nontoxic and safe for your skin.
  • COMFORT | Each pair of socks has been editor-tested and approved at least an 8 out of 10 on the comfort and breathability scale!
  • SUSTAINABILITY | Each brand is committed to transparency about their production, various sustainability initiatives, and many boast third-party certifications that back them up.

Pair your new socks with our favorite sustainable shoes or sustainable sneakers! And to elevate your cozy at-home or quick errand fit, add on these essential organic leggings and supportive sports bras for the full ensemble!

1. Q is for Quinn

Two legs raised and crossed against a white wall, wearing organic socks with orange stripes and denim shorts.

Natural Materials | Organic cotton, merino wool
Price | Starting at $17/1-pair

Q for Quinn began with a mama searching for socks gentle enough for her son’s eczema. When she couldn’t find what he needed, she set out to create her own. Today, the family-owned brand makes everyday essentials from organic cotton and responsibly sourced merino wool, with undyed options for those who prefer to skip dyes altogether.

Q for Quinn socks have quickly become my favorites. I tried two different styles: Merino Wool Midweight Adult Socks and the Natural (no dye) Midweight Crew Pacers. Both have earned a spot in my regular rotation, but I’m particularly obsessed with the Merino Wool Midweight socks. They’re the ultimate cozy girl socks — they feel like my feet are wrapped in the softest mini wool blankets. I’ll be living in these this fall and winter. I love that they’re thin enough to wear with most shoes but thick enough to keep my feet warm in boots on cold days. The Crew Pacers also have a soft cushioning underfoot that makes them extra comfy. They’re my new go-tos for wearing with boots or slipping on as an easy everyday sock in any season.

2. Bombas

Two legs raised against a white wall, wearing organic socks with colorful floral patterns.

Natural Materials | Organic cotton, Supima cotton, recycled cotton, merino wool
Price | Starting at $14/1-pair

I’ve been a big fan of Bombas for years; they’re some of the best socks I’ve ever worn. I tried the Women’s Dinner Party Ankle Socks in Fern Flower, size S. They have a snug band of elastic that helps keep them from slipping down into your shoe (the worst feeling). I adore the color and design, and these will be my go-to for walks with my dog and everyday sneaker wear in spring and summer.

I also wanted to try another Bombas style, so I chose the Bombas x Susan Alexandra Floral Embroidered Half Calf Socks. I love the floral embroidery and tiny gemstone details. I feel fun and cute in these socks and enjoy pairing them with clogs or flats to add a little pattern to an outfit. They are a bit tight on my feet; I may have needed to size up, though they might stretch out over time. They’re also on the thinner side, which will be great for spring here in Colorado, but they aren’t thick enough to wear with boots in winter.

3. Cozy Earth

A person’s bare legs are raised against a plain white wall, wearing mismatched pink and brown organic socks labeled “EARTH” and “COZY.”.

Natural Materials | Cotton, bamboo viscose
Price
| Starting at $14+/1-pair

For performance wear, Cozy Earth’s Essential Socks are a perfect choice, offering a seamless fit and moisture-wicking properties to keep your feet feeling fresh all day. I opted for the Essential Calf Sock 4-pack in Cedar, and I love the little detail of “cozy” and “earth” written on the feet. The subtle cushioning along the bottom makes them feel like slippers, without being so thick that I’d only wear them in winter. Made from mercerized cotton yarn (a treatment that makes yarn stronger), they’re super soft and the perfect height to pair with sneakers or short ankle boots.

4. Jungmaven

Two legs raised against a white wall, wearing organic socks with blue, red, and pink stripes, and text partially visible on the sides.

Natural Materials | Hemp, organic cotton
Price
| Starting at $18/1-pair

Jungmaven, a leading name in hemp apparel, uses naturally occurring hemp and organic cotton to produce vintage-style socks. To me, Jungmaven can do no wrong. I adore their thoughtfully made products, right down to these Town and Country Ankle Socks. The minute I put them on, I audibly sighed with pleasure. Made from an organic hemp/cotton blend, they’re so cozy and comfortable, with just the right amount of thickness to wear with boots in winter or slip on with sneakers. I also love the striped pattern, which gives them a little sporty look.

5. Pact

Two legs are raised against a white wall. The feet are wearing maroon organic socks with small white polka dots.

Natural Materials | GOTS Certified organic cotton
Price
| Starting at $14/2-pack

For organic, Fair Trade Certified socks, I love Pact, a Colorado-based brand making sustainable clothing more accessible to all. Pact offers just one sock style: Their Organic No-Show Socks 2-pack. I love the stripe and polka dot patterns, and they’re perfect for wearing with sneakers in summer. I also like slipping them on while warming up for yoga, when I want a little coverage without the thickness of a heavier sock.

6. MATE the Label

Two legs are raised against a plain white background, each wearing a dark brown, ribbed pair of organic socks.

Natural Materials | Organic cotton
Price
| Starting at $48/3-pack

If you’re looking for thick organic cotton socks to keep your feet cozy through the colder seasons, look no further than MATE the Label. The brand sources organic cotton to make pesticide- and toxin-free socks sewn in safe, ethical, and fair working conditions. I tried their Organic Cotton Sock 5 Pack and adore the muted earth tones that go with anything. These socks are substantial and warm — perfect for wearing with boots in the colder months, though a little too thick to be my everyday, year-round pairs. I also love how high they come up on the calf, with the option to scrunch them down for a more relaxed look.

7. EILEEN FISHER

Two legs raised against a white background, one foot wearing a gray striped organic sock and the other bare.

Natural Materials | Organic cotton
Price
| Starting at $18/1-pair

EILEEN FISHER is one of the most famous certified B Corps in the world. In addition to making stylish clothing, the brand also sells organic cotton socks. E.F.’s socks are sewn together with a touch of spandex and washed for a super-soft finish. I’ve always adored Eileen Fisher’s simple elegance, and even their Cotton Ankle Sock 3-Pack reflects that. These socks are made for everyday wear, with understated colors that go with everything. They’re on the thinner side, making them an easy, throw-on-and-go option for warmer seasons rather than chilly days.

8. Quince

Person lying on their back with legs raised and crossed, wearing black organic socks, against a plain white background.

Natural Materials | Organic cotton, merino wool, cashmere
Price
| Starting at $10/1-pair

Quince makes modern, ethical, and stylish clothing for everyone. Produced in BSCI-certified factories, anyone can snag a pair of the brand’s sustainable socks. Quince has a wide array of sock styles, and I opted for the Everyday Lightweight Cotton Ruffle Quarter Crew Sock (4-Pack). I love pairing socks with flats and clogs in the fall, and these are thin, almost like tights, making them easy to wear with dressier shoes. The ruffle detailing is such a lovely touch, and I instantly feel a little more elegant when I slip them on.

9. Organic Basics

Two legs are raised against a white wall, wearing light purple knee-high organic socks.

Natural Materials | Organic cotton
Price
| Starting at $9/1-pair

Organic Basics is a one-stop shop for affordable, well-made wardrobe essentials, and their organic cotton sock collection carries that same ethos down to your toes. They have so many sock styles that it was hard to choose, but I opted for their Core Tennis Crew Socks 3-pack in Lilac, size 39–42. Check their size guide to find the right fit for your shoe size. I adore the bright, springy color, though they’re quite tight around my calves. Rolling them down made them more comfortable, though. The mix of thinner and thicker knit sections around the foot gives them a cushioned feel without being bulky. I’ll wear these with sneakers and boots, or just for getting comfy around the house.

10. ONDO

Two legs extended upward against a white wall, each foot wearing pink organic socks.

Natural Materials | Certified organic cotton, merino wool
Price
| Starting at $16/1-pair

Treat yourself and your toes to ONDO‘s fashionable and functional low-cut, no-show socks. Their no-slip guarantee also ensures you’ll experience zero slippage as you walk in whatever shoe you wear. I love how unique these socks are — their design makes them feel almost like little shoes. The shape and elastic hug my feet perfectly, keeping them in place inside my shoes. I opted for their Cotton No Show 4-pack for the versatile mix of colors that goes with any shoe

11. Harvest & Mill

Natural Materials | Organic cotton
Price
| Starting at $18/1-pair

Harvest & Mill‘s socks are made from USA-grown organic cotton and naturally dyed in either tan, brown, or white. They’re then sewn in California’s Bay area. Rest assured, your purchase from this brand is organic, toxic-free, and supports a small U.S. business. We recommend buying a six-pack of socks to keep your feet warm and dry all for all of winter.
