Why The Airbus A350 Has Such An Exclusive Inflight Experience


The Airbus A350 is one of the most celebrated aircraft of its generation, liked by airlines and passengers alike the world over. With its advanced technology and unique features that range from higher cabin humidity to LED mood lighting, the A350 bills itself as offering passengers a comfortable journey, unrivaled by any other aircraft in the skies.

In this article, we take a closer look at the Airbus A350’s impressive features and examine what makes it such an enjoyable aircraft to fly. We will also consider the A350’s role in airline fleets across the world, and find out which carriers operate the largest fleets of A350s.

The Airbus A350 features a wider fuselage than many other widebody aircraft, resulting in a larger cabin and a greater sense of space. The aircraft’s 19.6 ft-wide cabin allows airlines to comfortably fit nine-abreast seating in economy class in a 3-3-3 configuration without compromising on seat width.

This wide cabin gives the A350 the edge over other comparable aircraft, such as the Boeing 787, which are noticeably narrower. For example, on its A350s, Virgin Atlantic offers a seat width of between 17.5 inches and 18 inches in economy class, compared to just 17 inches on the Boeing 787.

Quiet Engines Mean A Quiet Cabin

The Airbus A350 is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, which are among the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft engines available today. The Trent XWB engine has a very high bypass ratio of 9.3:1, which means that more air flows around the engine core rather than through it. A larger volume of slower-moving air, such as this, is quieter than a smaller volume of faster-moving air, which helps the engine minimize noise pollution, particularly during takeoff and landing.

The Trent XWB also boasts a 118-inch-diameter fan made up of carbon fiber composite. These modern fan blades are shaped and angled to reduce both noise emissions and turbulence. The engine also runs at slower speeds than older engines, resulting in less mechanical and aerodynamic noise being emitted from the front of the engine. The aircraft’s cabin also boasts some of the most effective soundproofing in the skies, helping to pass the benefits of its quiet engines on to the passengers onboard.

When it comes to the next generation of aircraft engines, the world’s largest commercial aircraft engine will enter service on the Boeing 777X. This aircraft will boast two General Electric GE9X engines, which have a fan diameter of 134 inches and can each generate up to 105,000 lbfs of thrust. The first deliveries of the 777X are currently planned for 2026, although the program is already six years behind schedule, so it remains to be seen when it will enter commercial service.

Better Air Quality & Lower Cabin Pressure

The Airbus A350 is specifically engineered for improved air quality and cabin pressure, making it one of the most comfortable long-haul aircraft to fly on. The aircraft boasts High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, which help to remove 99.7% of all airborne particles, including bacteria, viruses, and allergens. The cabin air is also refreshed every 2-3 minutes.

The Airbus A350 can maintain a higher humidity in the passenger cabin of around 20-25%, rather than the 10-15% typically found on older aircraft. This can help to reduce fatigue, dehydration, dry skin, and dry eyes, particularly on long-haul flights.

Combined with the better air quality is a lower cabin pressure of around 6,000 ft, compared to the 8,000 ft normally found on most aircraft. This means that passengers have more oxygen in their blood, feel less fatigued, and have a lower risk of headaches and other discomforts.

The interior of the Airbus A350 features curved cabin sidewalls, high ceilings, and sleek, minimalist surfaces, creating an open environment that feels less claustrophobic than an older aircraft. It also helps to make the cabin feel more spacious and airy, even with a full load of passengers.

The overhead lockers on the Airbus A350 are larger and more ergonomically placed, allowing more passengers to comfortably stow their carry-on bags without significantly impacting headroom in the cabin.

The Airbus A350 also features next-generation LED lighting. In addition to creating colorful cabins and ensuring everything is always on-brand, it also allows airlines to simulate natural light patterns, easing passengers into new time zones.

The concept for the Airbus A350 was first developed in 2006 as the European manufacturer looked to compete with Boeing’s existing 777 series and upcoming 787 series. The aircraft entered commercial service in January 2015 with Qatar Airways, operating a flight from the carrier’s hub at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) to Frankfurt Airport (FRA). The aircraft’s inaugural commercial service was captured in the video below:

The Airbus A350’s fuselage and wing structure are primarily made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, which reduces weight, increases fuel efficiency, and offers better corrosion resistance than traditional aluminum structures. As a result, the A350 burns up to 25% less fuel than older-generation aircraft, making it a favorite among environmentally conscious airlines as sustainability becomes an ever more prominent consideration throughout the aviation industry.

Two passenger variants of the Airbus A350 are currently available – the A350-900 and the larger A350-1000. Airbus also developed a sub-variant in partnership with Singapore Airlines, which deploys the A350-900ULR on its ultra-long-haul flights between Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and both New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

To date, the Airbus A350 has been involved in one hull-loss incident, when a Japan Airlines A350-900 collided with a De Havilland Canada Dash 8 operated by the Japan Coast Guard when landing at New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo. Although the aircraft caught fire and was completely destroyed, all 367 passengers and 12 crew members managed to escape alive – a testament to the A350’s safe design and the impeccable training standards of Japan Airlines. Unfortunately, five of the six crew members onboard the Japan Coast Guard aircraft were killed.

The World’s Largest Operators Of The Airbus A350

Singapore Airlines is currently the world’s largest operator of the Airbus A350, with an impressive 65 in its fleet – made up of 58 A350-900s and seven A350-900ULRs.

Qatar Airways was the launch customer for both the Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000, and today boasts the overall second-largest fleet of A350s in the world. The oneworld carrier typically deploys its A350s on long-haul routes, including Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) to Auckland Airport (AKL) in New Zealand, which is one of the world’s longest commercial air routes. However, the A350 is also well-suited to shorter hops around the region, including to Amman Queen Alia International Airport (AMM), Cairo International Airport (CAI), and Malé Velana International Airport (MLE).

Virgin Atlantic has the second-largest fleet of Airbus A350s in the UK, after British Airways. When the airline first ordered the Airbus A350 back in 2016, Richard Branson celebrated the news.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the A350 to Virgin Atlantic. It is an outstanding aircraft from both a customer and sustainability point of view. Sustainable growth and meeting our carbon targets is incredibly important to us, and the aircraft’s environmental credentials were a genuine factor in our selection.”

The aircraft has since proven immensely popular with the airline’s passengers. Today, Virgin Atlantic showcases the aircraft’s versatility by operating two different cabin configurations onboard its A350-1000s: a premium-heavy capacity of up to 335 passengers, with 44 in business class, and a more leisure-oriented, higher-capacity configuration of up to 397 passengers, with just 16 in business class.

The carrier normally deploys the former on routes such as London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), with the latter being used on routes including Manchester Airport (MAN) to Orlando International Airport (MCO).

It is clear that the Airbus A350 is leading the way in providing comfortable passenger journeys, even in economy class on ultra-long-haul flights. Carefully crafted details such as higher cabin humidity, LED mood lighting, and some of the quietest engines in the skies all contribute to the aircraft becoming so popular with passengers and airlines alike.
