Recent years have seen a softening of prices for short-hop private aviation, such as the popular route from Londonto Paris. Digital brokerage platforms have been particularly significant in driving down prices, particularly for travelers who are prepared to be flexible. The result has been that these private jet flights are often priced similarly to or cheaper than transatlantic first class, with the effect most pronounced for small jets. However, the largest private jets remain incredibly expensive for short hops.
Private transatlantic flights have not seen this effect. Despite speculation that a similar correction to that seen with short hops will occur, this type of aviation remains prohibitively expensive for anyone outside the world’s richest people.
Here’s How Much A Private Flight From London To Paris Costs
The private jet booking company Flyius
has collected data and provided predictions for short-hop private aviation. These are costs for chartering an aircraft rather than buying it outright. The firm acknowledges that, while private aviation is becoming cheaper, it is not becoming any less confusing.
The table below shows a full breakdown of the pricing estimations provided by Flyius for four classifications of aircraft:
Jet classification | Price | Standard capacity | Example aircraft | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Light jet | 4,500 euros ($5,265) | 4 – 7 passengers | Citation CJ3, Phenom 300, Learjet 45 | “Perfect for short European hops” |
Midsize jet | 7,500 euros ($8,775) | 7 – 9 passengers | Citation XLS, Hawker 800, Learjet 60 | “Offer more cabin space, stand-up headroom, and range” |
Heavy jet | 12,000 euros ($14,040) | 10 – 16 passengers | Bombardier Challenger605, Gulfstream G450, Legacy 650 | “Full-size cabins and premium amenities” |
Ultra-long-range jet | 20,000 euros ($23,400) | 12 – 19 passengers | Gulfstream G650, Global 7500, Falcon 8X | “The pinnacle of private aviation” |
Flyius also provides pricing estimates for other short European hops for each jet classification. For example, it predicts that a Geneva to Nice flight aboard a light jet will cost passengers between 7,500 and 10,500 euros. A Paris to Barcelona flight aboard a midsize jet is 13,000 to 18,000 euros.
The Factors Influencing Private Jet Chartering Prices
One of the reasons private jet chartering is so expensive is that there are multiple factors influencing pricing beyond just the route that has been selected. Firstly, round trips are often 15 to 25 percent cheaper per flight due to the removal of costs associated with repositioning the aircraft. Clients can expect higher costs when chartering during peak seasons or for popular events, such as the Cannes Film Festival or Monaco Grand Prix. Flights during these times are often 20 to 40 percent more expensive.
Advance bookings are a great way to access lower private jet prices, as more options will be available. Last-minute bookings can be ten to 20 percent more expensive. Private jet chartering clients can also save money on fees by choosing less popular, and often less convenient, airports. For example, Paris Le Bourget (LFPB) is cheaper than
Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG).

For the substantial expenditure of chartering a private jet, customers receive more than just access to the aircraft. They also get the crew and fuel required to operate the aircraft. Handling, landing, and parking fees are also usually included, along with insurance. Passengers will usually have access to basic catering. Additional fees may apply for extra services, such as premium catering, de-icing for cold weather flying, overnight crew expenses, and international handling fees. Services like premium catering are usually not relevant for short hops, as there is not enough time for a good meal.

Private bedrooms, showers, and a galley could all be expected on the most expensive options.
How First Class Flights Compare
First class is in decline in transatlantic aviation, with most airlines opting to offer advanced business class instead. Yet the airlines that still fly first-class products to New York, such as British Airways, Air France, and Lufthansa, continue to charge high prices that exceed light-jet chartering fees for short hops. To take Air France’s La Première as an example, which flies from Paris to New York – along with Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta, and Houston – figures of $10,000 to $20,000 have been quoted by Reuters and Roame. The latter also notes that passengers can pay 60,000 points for business class and an additional $1,500 to $3,000 for an upgrade.
Air France-KLM CEO, Ben Smith, explained the usual customers for La Première to Reuters, “Many of them have the choice of a private jet or flying in first class… A lot of people like to experience France. When they get on the airplane outside France, they want to start their journey from San Jose, Tokyo or Sao Paulo already in France through the environment on the airplane.”

The cost difference is even more pronounced for the world’s longest first class routes. An Emirates first class ticket on the 8,824-mile (14,201 km) journey from Dubai to Auckland frequently costs in excess of $20,000. The Qantas Airbus A380 first class product from Sydney to Dallas costs over $18,000. Only chartering the largest and most advanced private aircraft costs more than this for flights from London to Paris.
The Cost Of Owning A Private Jet
Another way to fly private on short hops, such as London to Paris, is to own the aircraft outright. This method is far more expensive than transatlantic first class aviation for all but the most prolific users. The initial price of the aircraft runs well into the millions. Multflight.com states private jet ownership costs £3.5 to £5 million for light jets, £6 to £9 million for midsize jets and £30 to £50 million for the largest aircraft. For example, the large and modern Gulfstream G650 costs upwards of $45 million.
The purchasing price is far from the only cost private jet owners must meet. Operating the jet costs £1,000 to $2,500 per hour of flight time. Insurance premiums can reach £200,000 annually. Maintenance remains expensive. Even if the private jet shows no signs of wear, routine inspections can cost up to £500,000 annually. These costs only get higher as a jet ages, and parts require replacement.
Private jet owners also need somewhere to store their planes. In the UK, hangar fees start at £10,000 for the smallest jets. Finally, there are management fees for the aircraft. Aircraft management professionals usually charge around five to ten percent of the plane’s annual operating costs.

Comparing Flying Privately To Flying First Class
We investigate high-end air travel, focusing on cost and suitability. When is flying private better value than first class?
The Cost Of Flying Transatlantic Private
London to New York is an incredibly popular private jet corridor. Destinations like Teterboro Airport (TEB) in New Jersey and Farnborough Airport (FAB) outside London have been optimized for private travel. Private passengers use these airports to avoid the congestion associated with commercial terminals.
While transatlantic first class aviation is often more expensive than a short private hop, it remains significantly cheaper than chartering a private jet for a transatlantic flight. Super-midsize jets such as the Citation Longitude or Gulfstream G280 are the smallest aircraft that can operate such routes, capable of carrying eight to ten passengers. Costs are usually between $85,000 and $120,000. Heavy private jets are more expensive. With a capacity of ten to 14 passengers, you can expect to pay up to $180,000. Ultra-long-range jets are the most expensive. These large private aircraft have a capacity of 12 to 19 passengers. Chartering companies charge their clients upwards of $250,000 per flight.
The World Cup Legends Who Own Private Jets
Transatlantic private aviation, as well as private flying in North America, will reach a new high due to the ongoing FIFA World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada. The extra demand will push chartering costs around the world higher. Some footballers avoid this problem by owning a private jet, although many are coy about revealing the exact details of their private planes. One example is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has a Bombardier Global Express XRS. He uses this plane to manage his playing career in Saudi Arabia, family commitments in Europe, and global business needs. CR7 has owned this aircraft since 2024. Ronaldo’s competitor for ‘greatest of all time’ status, Lionel Messi, owns a Gulfstream V. This aircraft, a typical long-haul private workhorse, has the registration LV-IRQ. Messi is thought to have owned it since 2018.
Some retired World Cup legends continue to own private jets. England’s iconic number nine, Wayne Rooney, has a Dassault Falcon 900LX. This jet is known for its long-range capability and a size needed to make long trips comfortable. Rooney has had this jet since 2018. Finally, England’s David Beckham owns and operates a Bombardier Challenger 350. This is a standard regional jet, rather than the large and long-range examples owned by many others in his industry. With a capacity of eight to ten passengers, this aircraft is ideal for frequent and short to medium-haul flights. Private jet ownership is practical for Beckham, who splits his time between the US and UK.
