Why 22 Russian-Built Jets Have Sat Rotting At Mexican Airports Since 2020



In 2011 Interjet was Mexico’s third-largest airline by passengers and was looking for a regional aircraft to support its domestic network. The obvious candidates were from Bombardier and Embraer but the carrier instead signed for 30 Sukhoi Superjet 100s! The financial logic was understandable at the time. However, this would be a fatal decision for Interjet, as it would be a major factor in the airline’s downfall.
