American Airlines’ new era of premium travel is expanding to its largest aircraft. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier unveiled its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER featuring Flagship Suites on Wednesday – marking the third aircraft type in its fleet to feature the interior.
The luxurious new lie-flat product was introduced last summer on newly delivered 787-9 Dreamliners before making its narrowbody debut on the Airbus A321XLR in December. The 777-300ER overhaul positions American to offer more premium seats on an aircraft than any other US carrier.
Flagship Suites On American’s Flagship Aircraft
In what it refers to as a “sophisticated Flagship Suite experience,” American said the product delivers an “elevated travel journey designed around customer comfort.” The aircraft, registered as N718AN, underwent an extensive retrofit process in Hong Kong. Simple Flying previously reported that it was out of service for eight months for the interior upgrades. It was ferried back to 
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) from Hong Kong on August 13. Data from Flightradar24 indicates the aircraft performed a test flight lasting over two hours last week.
It is equipped with a whopping 70 Flagship Suite seats in a 1-2-1 layout in the forward cabin, eight of which are branded as Flagship Suite Preferred, with up to 19% more bed space and 42% more living area. Premium Economy has 44 recliner seats arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration, while the main cabin comprises the remaining 216 seats. 30 main cabin seats are designated as Main Cabin Extra and feature additional legroom. All seats onboard have Bluetooth connectivity, WiFi sponsored by AT&T, 4K screens, and power. Flagship Suites and Premium Economy seats have wireless charging pads, while the main cabin has AC power outlets. The new interior also expands the aircraft’s capacity from 304 to 330 total seats.
Nat Pieper, American’s Chief Commercial Officer, spoke about the retrofit in a statement on Wednesday.
“Our Flagship aircraft represents the next evolution of premium travel at American. With elegantly designed interiors and spacious premium seating, the Boeing 777-300ER reflects our continued commitment to creating a travel experience around what customers value most.”
Bidding Farewell To An International & Transcontinental First Class
The retrofit marks the official end of a long-haul first class product on American. The legacy airline first took delivery of the 777-300ER back in 2012 and equipped the cabin with both Flagship First and Flagship Business. The interior has remained the same since, making the aircraft American’s only widebody to feature a dual first and business class. Although the onboard product is virtually the same, the striking difference is exclusivity. Flagship First has eight lie-flat seats arranged spaciously, while Business has 52 seats.
American has branded first class on the 777-300ER as “Flagship First International,” which has been famously accompanied by additional perks, such as private check-in at the airport and an exclusive fine dining experience at select airports. With the new Flagship Suites, the Flagship First and Flagship Business products will be retired. Now referred to simply as the Flagship cabin, all 70 passengers will receive the same experience, including priority check-in, security, boarding, and baggage handling, according to the airline.
American’s A321 Transcon (A321T) subfleet has been the narrowbody counterpart to the 777-300ER’s dual premium cabins. Similarly, Flagship First boasts a more spacious configuration with a 1-1 layout, as opposed to Flagship Business’ 2-2 layout. These aircraft, which are exclusively deployed on cross-country routes to Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, and San Francisco, are being replaced by the A321XLR. As such, American has been gradually converting the planes to the standard A321 configuration featuring domestic first class – a move that was first reported by Simple Flying in 2024.

With the retirement of the legacy Flagship product, American will discontinue selling Flagship First on the 777-300ER in November, while A321T first class purchases will cease in March.
“As American rolls out its Flagship Suite product, Flagship First will no longer be available for purchase on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for travel beginning Nov. 19,” the airline said. “And with more Airbus A321XLR aircraft entering American’s fleet, Flagship First will no longer be available for purchase on Transcontinental routes for travel beginning March 28, 2027.”
Only Two US-Based 777-300ER Operators
American’s 777-300ER fleet comprises 20 examples. The planes regularly operate long-haul routes to London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Sydney from the carrier’s hubs in Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, and Charlotte. N718AN is expected to make its commercial debut Wednesday evening, operating as AA953 from 
John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE).
Ahead of its return revenue service, American hosted media to preview the aircraft on a special repositioning flight from DFW to JFK. The airline is one of only two US carriers to operate the 777-300ER; the other is its main competitor, 
United Airlines. While the Chicago-based airline’s 777-300ERs are younger, with the first delivered in 2016, they underwent a retrofit in 2019 to feature up to 60 business class seats.
