Singapore Airlines, this year, will be operating its fleet of 12 Airbus A380 aircraft to nine destinations across its global network. Considering the capacity offered by the aircraft type and the limited number of airframes the airline operates, the carrier has selected these destinations for the A380 based on passenger demand. This is because the A380 heavily relies on market demand in order to be operated efficiently.

Singapore Airlines Will Operate Its A380s On Nine Routes

Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for the A380s and historically has taken delivery of 24 of these aircraft. However, today, the airline’s fleet of A380s is only half of what it used to be, but it remains the second-largest operator of the type, tied with British Airways. Due to the very high capacity the aircraft type offers, all A380 operators, apart from Emirates, are very selective as to which routes the aircraft type is being deployed on.

In the case of Singapore Airlines, the carrier will eventually grow its A380 operations to nine destinations later this year, with the carrier expected to operate up to ten daily A380 flights for the rest of the year. The following interactive map shows details of the routes that the carrier will be operating the aircraft type on, as detailed by Cirium, an aviation analytics company.

From these nine routes, only two routes will see double daily A380 services, and these are on the airline’s services from its home base, Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). The airline sees considerable demand on both these routes, which warrants the carrier’s continuous deployment of double-daily A380 operations over the years.

A Record Number Of Flights To Australia And Europe

Since the conflict in the Middle East began, the super-connectors of the region have not yet fully recovered. Seizing the opportunity, Singapore Airlines has expanded its network and operations aggressively to Europe and Australia this year, positioning itself as a suitable alternative for connecting passengers to the Middle Eastern carriers. The carrier’s plans for the A380 do play an important role within this context. In fact, the airline will operate 29% more A380 services this winter compared to last year.

To Europe, the airline is scheduled to operate a record 128 weekly services, roughly equating to up to 18 daily departures. Apart from new routes, the carrier has also increased frequency. The aforementioned UK market will see five additional weekly services operated by Singapore Airlines. Elsewhere within the continent, the carrier will be operating its A380 on a daily basis to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) until the end of the IATA summer schedule.

On the other hand, the airline is also operating a record number of flights to Australia this year, accounting for up to 23 daily services, once the Winter schedule begins. However, the carrier has been increasing its operations to Australia from the start of the year, including resuming daily A380 services to Melbourne, complementing the double daily A380 services to Sydney. Furthermore, the carrier will also be deploying daily A380 services to Auckland Airport (AKL) starting at the end of October.

Despite the A380 being designed to transport a high number of passengers, Singapore Airlines has configured its aircraft cabins in a less dense manner, allowing it to focus more on premium cabins. Therefore, the airline’s fleet of A380s can accommodate a total of 470 passengers across four cabin classes. According to data from aeroLOPA, the airline has configured its A380s as detailed in the table below.

With the airline being particularly famous for luxurious onboard products and a reputation for premium cabins, Singapore Airlines’ fleet of A380s is no exception. The aircraft features some of the best products the airline offers, and its first class product, Singapore Suites, is among the best first class products in the sky. While the airline retired the first half of its A380 fleet, the airframes that remain all underwent a cabin retrofit with new products.
