Volaris’ Huge US Expansion: 4 New Routes Revealed [List & Map]

Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris has been steadily expanding its presence in the United States. In June, the airline launched ten new routes between Mexico and the US within just a few days, including services to Detroit (DTW), Salt Lake City (SLC), Los Angeles (LAX), Houston (IAH) and Orlando (MCO).

Indeed, the US is an important transborder market for the airline, and Volaris is looking to strengthen its presence there because of strong demand from passengers visiting friends and relatives (VFR) as well as tourists. It has now added four more US routes, including some new links that have never been served directly before.

Two of the four new routes will operate from Volaris’ Guadalajara (GDL) hub, where it has significantly expanded its US network. From December 2, the low-cost carrier will start four weekly flights to Atlanta (ATL), operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with its 186-seat Airbus A320neo. The airline will compete directly with Delta Air Lines, which currently operates one daily flight between the two cities. Aeromexico also operated the route but ended its service last year.

The other Guadalajara route is more notable because it will connect the Mexican airport with Washington Dulles (IAD) for the first time. Volaris currently operates nonstop flights between San Salvador and Washington Dulles through its subsidiary Volaris El Salvador, but this will be the first time the airline connects its main hub with the Washington airport. The route will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The Washington DC area is currently the third-largest unserved US city from Guadalajara, even when all three airports in the area are considered.

The third new route will connect Puebla (PBC) with Chicago O’Hare(ORD). From December 2, Volaris will operate three weekly flights between the two cities on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It will be the first time an airline has operated a direct route between Puebla and Chicago. Volaris has been gradually expanding its network from Puebla. In June, the airline launched services to Newark Liberty(EWR), Houston(IAH) and Los Angeles (LAX), with four weekly flights to Newark and Los Angeles and three weekly flights to Houston.

Notably, the Newark service also marked the first direct connection between Puebla and the Greater New York area. Furthermore, the final new route will connect Querétaro (QRO) with Las Vegas Harry Reid (LAS), another city pair that has never previously had a direct service. The new route follows Volaris’ expansion from Querétaro earlier this year, when it launched services to Denver (DEN), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Houston (IAH), Orlando (MCO) and San Antonio (SAT).

Indeed, the airline has prioritized its transborder network as it looks to add more capacity in the higher-yielding market. Back in May, Enrique Beltranena, Volaris’ President and CEO, said, “Amid elevated global jet fuel prices and as discussed during our first-quarter earnings call, we implemented targeted capacity reductions during [April], mostly in the domestic market, while prioritizing the higher-yielding transborder segment.

Overall, Volaris now has a total of 25 routes between Mexico and the US. Most of its US capacity comes from Guadalajara, which is by far the airline’s largest transborder gateway. According to schedule data from aviation analytics company Cirium, Volaris is offering more than 11,700 flights from Guadalajara to the US in 2026, with more than 2.47 million seats available.
