United Airlines is expanding the deployment of its premium-heavy Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner this winter, adding two more routes to the aircraft’s schedule during the holiday travel period. The new configuration will operate between 
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Houston (IAH) before later entering service between San Francisco and Sydney (SYD) this winter. The schedule was filed by United during a September 24 update, according to AeroRoutes.
The aircraft is United’s new 222-seat 787-9 with its Elevated interior, a substantially different configuration from the carrier’s existing Dreamliners. United has concentrated more capacity in premium cabins, including more Polaris business class Premium Plus seats, while reducing the number of economy seats. The strategy gives United additional flexibility to place its newest premium product on routes where demand is strongest, including during the busy end-of-year travel period.
San Francisco-Houston Gets The Elevated 787-9
The first new deployment is between San Francisco International Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. AeroRoutes reports that the 222-seat 787-9 will operate daily on the route from October 25 through December 15. Although the aircraft is designed primarily around United’s international premium offering, the Houston service is domestic. Deploying it between two major United hubs gives the airline an opportunity to use the aircraft between international assignments while also introducing more passengers to the new cabin.

The temporary assignment also provides a practical way to utilize a relatively low-density aircraft. The Elevated 787-9 carries 222 passengers, compared with 257 seats on United’s existing 787-9 configuration. Its 64 Polaris seats represent a substantial increase over the 48-seat business-class cabin on the older layout, while Premium Plus rises from 21 to 35 seats.
Sydney Service Expands The International Network
United will then shift the aircraft toward one of its longest international markets. The 222-seat 787-9 is scheduled to begin San Francisco-Sydney service on December 2, initially operating three times per week. From December 17 through February 10, 2027, the service is scheduled to increase to daily operations.
The timing puts the aircraft on the route through the peak holiday period, when demand for premium long-haul travel can be particularly significant. The aircraft’s configuration also gives United considerably more premium capacity than a conventional 787-9. United’s first international Elevated 787-9 service began earlier in 2026 between San Francisco and Singapore, followed by service to London. The airline originally said the aircraft would be used to strengthen its international premium proposition, with at least 30 787-9s featuring the new interior expected to be flying by the end of 2027.
What Makes United’s New 787-9 Different
The Elevated interior is built around a much larger premium cabin. Eight Polaris Studio suites occupy the first rows of the two business-class sections, alongside 56 standard Polaris suites. The Studio seats are 25% larger than United’s standard Polaris seats and include lie-flat beds, privacy doors, an ottoman, and 27-inch 4K OLED screens. Six of the eight ottomans can accommodate a companion with a seatbelt.
The 35 Premium Plus seats also receive an upgraded product, including privacy dividers, wireless charging, and 16-inch 4K OLED screens. Economy passengers receive 13-inch 4K OLED seatback displays with Bluetooth connectivity, while the aircraft offers a substantially different seating balance from United’s existing 787-9s. United advertises the aircraft as having 99 premium seats, including Polaris and Premium Plus, giving it the highest premium-seat proportion in the carrier’s fleet. The configuration reflects United’s broader effort to increase premium capacity while maintaining a long-haul network built around the 787 family.
The additional Houston and Sydney assignments show that United is not restricting the new aircraft to its initial international routes. Instead, the carrier can move the premium-heavy 787-9 between markets as seasonal demand and fleet availability change, giving passengers on both domestic and international services access to its newest long-haul cabin during the holiday period.
