Perhaps, far worse, many leading progressive Black voices appear too timid to criticize the mayor lest they risk offending their fan bases’ slavish devotion to Mamdani and his aggressively anti-Trump agenda. Indeed, in an Instagram post last week, New York Times opinion columnist Tressie McMillon Cottom — who’s both Black and heavily focused on inequality, equity and racial justice — noted Mamdani’s Black-free Deputy Mayor roster, but literally said she refuses to comment, let alone condemn it, despite clearly finding it concerning.
