
The United States has the largest military in the world by far, operating over 13,000 aircraft across all of its branches (Air Force, Navy, Army, Marines, and Coast Guard). With this, the armed forces operate a significant number of older aircraft in addition to cutting-edge designs, while some manufacturers continue to produce aircraft first designed in the mid-20th century.
Ultimately, these planes don’t need to be cost-effective, but only effective in their mission roles, meaning that there’s often no true disadvantage to operating an old but proven design. More often, the US military tends to prefer newer designs for its fighters and bombers compared to other aircraft types, since the missions that these planes operate are extremely demanding.
Advances in weaponry, avionics, aerodynamics, and stealth mean that older aircraft become obsolete quickly. However, with cargo transports or utility helicopters, a newer design doesn’t provide much benefit over a legacy type, while costing significantly more to develop. As such, many manufacturers continue to simply improve upon their existing designs.

The Lockheed Martin F-16
In Production Since 1973
The F-16 Fighting Falcon was originally developed and produced by General Dynamics. It was the third aircraft in the ‘teen series’ of fourth-generation American fighters, following the F-14 and F-15, while the F/A-18 came later. The prototype F-16 rolled out in 1973, while the type entered service with the USAF in 1980, but General Dynamics ended up selling the F-16 program to Lockheed in 1993.
Lockheed merged with Martin Marietta in 1995 to create Lockheed Martin, which continues to produce the F-16. Production of the F-16 was paused in 2017 and then restarted again when Lockheed Martin began building the F-16V Viper variant in 2019. The upgraded Viper entered service in 2021, and the variant is mainly a technological upgrade to the F-16 airframe.
This includes a new radar, upgraded avionics, improved cockpit displays, and new electronic warfare suites. Older F-16s can be upgraded to the F-16V Viper specifications, and the aircraft offers many of the capabilities seen in fifth-generation fighters, but inside the F-16. The F-16 is the world’s most common fixed-wing military aircraft in service, with militaries around the world operating a combined total of over 2,000 units as of the time of writing.
Small and nimble, the F-16 has proven to be an exceptional dogfighter, able to outmaneuver almost any fighter in service. It was intentionally designed to be slightly aerodynamically unstable for superior maneuvering, and the sheer number of F-16s in service means that the aircraft is extremely cost-effective to operate, while also being easy to upgrade.

The Boeing F-15
In Production Since 1972
When issuing Request For Proposal documents for its fourth-generation fighters, the Pentagon aimed to ensure that its new planes were maneuverable in close-range engagements, a notable shortcoming of prior designs like the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 was the first of the ‘Teen Series’, designed for the US Navy, while the F-15 was designed as an air superiority fighter for the US Air Force.
Originally developed by McDonnell Douglas and introduced in 1976, the F-15 is one of the most successful fighters of all time, having never been defeated in air-to-air combat. McDonnell Douglas released several basic versions of the F-15, and later developed the aircraft into the F-15E Strike Eagle, introduced in 1989.
The firm merged with
Boeing in 1997, with the new company continuing production of the Strike Eagle. In the 2010s, Boeing began working on new upgrades to the F-15 line that are collectively known as the F-15 Advanced Eagle. The manufacturer has already made multiple sales to foreign buyers, while the USAF has committed to the F-15EX variant.
The F-15EX is equipped with the General Electric F110 turbofan, along with a new radar and electronic warfare system. The aircraft features a new fly-by-wire system and strengthened wings, while also possessing new cockpit displays. Although it’s a heavier aircraft than before, the advancements made for the F-15EX Eagle II have made it a more maneuverable aircraft. While it’s not as survivable as a fifth-generation fighter, it’s more than sufficient for a wide variety of missions.

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook
In Production Since 1962
In 1957, the Vertol Corporation began working on a new tandem-rotor heavy-lift helicopter that was initially referred to as the HC-1B. The company was acquired by Boeing in 1960 and subsequently renamed as Boeing Vertol, with the aircraft entering service in 1962 as the CH-47 Chinook. Within the United States armed forces, the Chinook is primarily flown by the US Army, as well as by the US Army National Guard and the US Army Reserve. The Chinook has also been exported to several different nations.
Currently, Boeing is producing the Chinook as the CH-47F Block II, along with a special operations variant dubbed the MH-47G. This aircraft features updated avionics, more powerful engines, a higher payload capacity, and superior performance in hot conditions. The Chinook has the second-highest payload capacity of any Western helicopter, behind only the Sikorsky CH-32, and it’s been exported to several foreign nations over its 64 years in production. In addition, the Chinook has been sold as a civilian model.

The US Army is currently looking at a potential Block III upgrade to the CH-47 Chinook, although it’s currently focusing on receiving the CH-47F Block II. Despite the platform’s age, the Army is not looking for a clean-sheet replacement for the CH-47 and is instead focusing on replacing its smaller helicopters. Meanwhile, the CH-47F Chinook Block IIs are expected to remain in service until the 2060s, or about a century from when the type was first introduced (although the actual helicopters will be much younger).

The Bell UH-1 Huey
In Production Since 1956
The Huey first entered service with the US Army in 1959, and quickly became an icon in large part due to its extensive use in the Vietnam War. The UH-1 and its derivatives proved to be durable, versatile rotorcraft that could be used for a wide variety of missions, ranging from troop transport to medevac and more. It was the first mass-produced turbine-powered helicopter flown by the US armed forces, and its widespread use made the Huey a pop culture icon throughout the late 20th century.
Bell is currently producing two variants of the Huey, dubbed the UH-1Y Venom and the AH-1Z Viper. The UH-1Y Venom is an upgraded version of the twin-engined UH-1 version, featuring more advanced technology and a slightly longer cabin than the prior UH-1N Twin Huey. Meanwhile, the AH-1Z Viper is the latest attack variant of the Huey line, featuring a differentiated design and weaponry for offensive operations while maintaining a high degree of parts/systems commonality with the UH-1Y Venom.

Both helicopters are armed, but the UH-1Y is mainly a transport/utility helicopter that can also engage in combat operations. Meanwhile, the AH-1Z is designed specifically as a combat rotorcraft. The UH-1Y entered service in 2008, while the AH-1Z began flying with the US Marine Corps in 2010. They’re relatively new types, and if the Pentagon decides that a more modern helicopter is necessary, Bell will likely respond with further improvements to the UH-1 line, given that the planes are reliable, durable, and effective even today.

The Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules
In Production Since 1954
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules holds the record for the world’s longest continuously produced military aircraft, at 72 years as of the time of writing. Across the past seven decades, Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin) has released over 40 variants of the Hercules, including civilian models designated as the L-100.
The C-130 has proven to be exceptionally versatile, easy to maintain, adaptable for a variety of roles, and can operate on poor runway surfaces, which is why it can so easily be developed into additional models. Currently, Lockheed Martin is only producing subvariants of the C-130J Super Hercules, a stretched version of the original with upgraded engines, new propeller blades, modernized cockpit technology, and superior field performance.
Just as before, the C-130J is proving to be a versatile platform that can serve as troop transport, a freighter, an airborne command center, an aerial refueler, a weather reconnaissance plane, a maritime patrol aircraft, support operations at sea, and more. Ultimately, developing a clean-sheet aircraft to take the same role as the C-130 would be an expensive undertaking for any manufacturer.
These costs would get passed down to the Pentagon, and it would take time to build a dependable, cost-effective support network. At the same time, this hypothetical new plane would offer little material benefit over the C-130 with today’s technology. This is why the C-130 and other veteran aircraft types have remained in production for as long as they have, because they do the job more than adequately while being cost-effective.
