An incident from earlier this week saw an agitated passenger’s actions disrupt a regular United Express service, causing the Embraer E175 jet to perform an emergency landing, back at the point of origin, immediately after taking off. This resulted in the flight being delayed by around 90 minutes before the aircraft could depart again from Indianapolis to Houston.
No other passengers or crew were reported to be hurt, while the passenger who created the disruption was restrained and offloaded from the aircraft. The police force was involved, and the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is now investigating this serious incident.
Disruption During The Take-Off
This incident occurred on June 30, when a passenger onboard a United Express service (UA 3989), operated by Mesa Airlines, reportedly became agitated shortly after the aircraft’s take-off roll and tried to open the cabin doors. The service was scheduled to be operated from Indianapolis International Airport (IND) to 
Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The Indianapolis Local News site – 13 WTHR, reported that the disruptive passenger had made a 911 call from within the aircraft during take-off, stating that he was in danger.
According to CNN, the passenger’s actions, including that of trying to open the doors, prompted the flight crew to perform an emergency landing. The publication reported the following quote from the radio communication between the pilot and the control tower, “We have a belligerent passenger trying to open the cabin door”. The report further specifies that the aircraft returned to Houston just 15 minutes after taking off, where the aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate.
The passenger involved was restrained by other passengers onboard the aircraft and was met by the airport police at the gate, where he was offloaded and detained. The aircraft eventually departed for Houston again, after a 90-minute delay during which time the crew members and ground staff performed the necessary safety inspections and checks, along with refueling the aircraft.

Checks Required After Emergency Landings
Performing an emergency landing shortly after taking off is a matter of flight safety, and is encouraged to be done when the flight crew deems it necessary. However, it is important to note that this can often impact the aircraft’s ability to continue operating immediately. In such scenarios, the aircraft’s weight plays an important role in helping determine what the next steps are.
As seen in the above incident, the aircraft performed an emergency landing within 15 minutes of taking off. This would then imply that there would have been a considerable quantity of fuel left on board the aircraft. This is where the flight crew has to ensure that the aircraft can safely land, and it is operating within the parameters of the airframe’s load limits designated for landing. There have been incidents in the past wherein certain procedures were followed for an aircraft to land in an overweight condition.
However, in these situations, it was followed up with meticulous aircraft inspection to ensure the aircraft remained airworthy, and the airframe had not sustained any structural damage. Depending on the situation and time available, sometimes, the flight crew might opt to burn off fuel or jettison excess fuel to bring the aircraft under acceptable loads before performing a landing.

FAA Records Over 800 Unruly Passengers In 2026
CNN’s data indicates that the FAA has received reports of over 830 unruly passengers during the first six months of this year alone. This number accounts for more than half the number of unruly passengers recorded by the FAA throughout the whole of 2025 (1,621 unruly passengers).
While it is one thing for passengers to try to open the aircraft cabin doors in flight (the pressure differential seals the door in place), there have also been incidents where passengers tried to access the aircraft flight deck during the flight. An example of such an incident was reported as recently as May, when a passenger onboard a United service from the Dominican Republic to New Jersey.
However, the FAA is very strict when it comes to issuing fines to passengers for their disruptive behavior, which impacts flight operations and safety. As a consequence of an unruly passenger incident from 2021, the FAA in 2024 issued record-high fines of over $80,000. While the overall level of unruly passengers is lower than that of the peak recorded in 2021, the number of incidents is still high.
