Kyle Wootton scored the only goal as Stockport battled to a 1-0 win over struggling Peterborough in League One.
Posh, who sacked Luke Williams and appointed interim boss Ryan Harley after last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Doncaster, created the first opening in the eighth minute when Harry Ashfield struck a tame effort at goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond.
Peterborough stopper Alex Bass kept out a close-range shot from Wootton with a smart diving save before Harry Wood’s powerful effort was deflected wide as Stockport pressed for an opener on the half hour.
A lightning-fast Peterborough counter-attack saw Boluwatife Shofowoke sprint on to an incisive pass forward from Harry Leonard and force a low save from Ashby-Hammond as the away side ended the half on the front foot.
Stockport took the lead six minutes after the break when Ben Woods’ attempted clearance ricocheted off Jack Diamond and landed at the feet of Wootton, who fired home his sixth goal of the season.
Winger Shofowoke curled a shot at Ashby-Hammond before a well-worked short corner gave Ethan Williams room to flash a teasing centre across goal as the away side continued to carry a threat.
However, the Hatters fought off late Posh pressure to climb to fifth in League One with victory.
