United States ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations. The Daina Beach-based carrier announced that it would no longer operate flights on Saturday, May 2, ending the airline’s 33 year history. The airline was hoping to secure creditor support and a US Government bailout, but these talks ultimately failed, and the end of the line is now here for these infamous yellow aircraft.
The airline posted on its website that it will no longer operate flights and passengers should not go to the airport. In a positive move, the airline will automatically refund debit or credit card bookings, while vouchers, credits, and points are subject to bankruptcy court proceedings. Other airlines across the United States are now stepping up and offering rescue fares for affected passengers.
The End Is Here For Spirit Airlines
Spirit has ultimately struggled to gain financial stability since the COVID-19 Pandemic, then came along the Israel and Iran crisis, which has sent the cost of global fuel prices soaring, ultimately vacuuming up any of the remaining funds that this ultra-low-cost carrier had left.
The airline had hoped to secure a government bailout, but this was unable to get across the line and was widely opposed by other shareholders, who would have seen their investments wiped out, with 90% of the airline then owned by the taxpayer. While ceasing operations was the last choice anyone had wanted, the time has now come to say goodbye to Spirit Airlines. The carrier shared the following statement on its website:
“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”
Major Carriers Are Now Offering Rescue Fares
Airlines across the United States have sprung into action, offering one-way capped rescue fares for stranded passengers. 
United Airlines has $199 one way fares on most routes, with $299 one way fares for long-haul services for travel through May 16. To be eligible for these, you must book via the airline’s website while being a MileagePlus member and provide the Spirit booking reference.
New York-based JetBlue is also offering $99 one-way rescue fares on travel through May 6 on similar Spirit/JetBlue routes. The airline has also capped Blue Basic fares at $299 for flights to Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, while also adding 11 new routes to fill the void left by Spirit’s collapse.
Southwest Airlines will offer a one-way flat ticket at either $200, $300, or $400, depending on the flight distance, for travel through May 6, and can be booked at the airport ticket counter. The airline is also offering a status match between Spirit Silver or Gold Elite to A-List.

American Airlines has also introduced rescue fares on all routes that it overlapped with Spirit. To add additional capacity, the airline has up-scaled to larger aircraft with higher seat capacity, and is even hosting recruitment events to hire now jobless Spirit employees.
Delta Air Lines will introduce ticket price capping on high-volume routes that overlap with Spirit, and these reduced ticket prices will remain in place for around five days to support displaced passengers.
Finally, Frontier Airlines is reducing its base fares by 50% on travel booked before May 10. The largest discounts do require a three-week advanced purchase, with the largest discounts available on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday.
Spirit Airlines demise, unfortunately, leaves a large gap in the United States aviation industry, and the airline’s impact and its reign as the leader in ultra-low-cost travel, its operating to slim margins quickly eroded it into an airline that was making no money. From humble beginnings in Michigan almost 34 years ago, to becoming the most prolific Ultra-Low-Cost Carrier in the United States, the end has come for Spirit.
