  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is now the top-grossing domestic release.
  • It overtook ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’
  • It’s also Sony’s most successful movie.

It may have lost its position atop the box office charts to ‘Practical Magic 2’ following a six-week reign, but Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ isn’t sweating that.

Because the latest web-slinging adventure for the friendly neighborhood hero has notched up an impressive record, overtaking ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing domestic release in history, earning $936.773 million after 47 days in theaters.

The ‘Star Wars’ entry had held the crown for more than a decade, but ‘Brand New Day’ is the new champ. Now we await the traditional celebratory message from Lucasfilm –– perhaps Rey handing over a golden lightsaber to Peter Parker?

As its pace slows, the new Spidey movie seems unlikely to hit a billion at the domestic box office (potential re-releases not withstanding), but it has plenty more to celebrate.

Globally, it has so far earned a massive $2.45 billion and sits as the third-highest grossing movie of all time, trailing just 2009’s ‘Avatar’ ($2.9 billion) and  ‘Avengers: Endgame’ ($2.7 billion).

It cleared $1 billion after just six days of release and reached $2 billion after three weekends, becoming the second-fastest film after ‘Endgame’ to reach the threshold.

The post-credit “scene” of ‘Brand New Day’ featured the Spider-tracker showing Peter off-world, which points to him appearing in either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ (nothing confirmed for that yet) or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ (more likely.)

And you know Sony and Marvel are already looking to make plans for another solo outing…
