Destin Daniel Cretton Developing ‘Hawaii Five-O’ Movie

With his career seeing a serious boost thanks to the smash hit of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ (which has ridden the top of the box office charts for six weeks to more than $2.45 billion worldwide), director Destin Daniel Cretton is setting up other opportunities.

And, per Deadline, the Maui-born filmmaker is circling something that hits close to home: developing a new movie based on classic cop series ‘Hawaii Five-O.’

Cretton will work on the new project for Paramount Pictures with writers Chris Bremner (‘Bad Boys for Life’) and Noah Oppenheim (‘Jackie’), but it’s still early days.

What’s the story of ‘Hawaii Five-O’?

Created by Leonard Freeman, the 1968-80 CBS series starred Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, the no-nonsense lawman who headed a state police task force in Hawaii, and became known for its catchphrase “Book ‘em, Danno,” and earworm theme tune.

While a previous movie development didn’t lead to big screen action, it did generate the 2010-20 CBS TV series remake that starred Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan.

What else is Destin Daniel Cretton working on?

Cretton naturally has a lot to consider right now, not least the very likely (if yet to be officially confirmed) next Spidey movie.

He’s also developing a film based on the Japanese Manga series ‘Naruto’ and has repeatedly said he’s looking to bring fans a sequel to his previous Marvel film, ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’
