Southwest Airlines Just Hit 100 Daily International Flights On An Aircraft That Can’t Take It Much Further

Southwest Airlines exceeded 100 daily international departures for the first time in the summer of 2026, a record for a carrier that did not fly outside the US until 2014. According to Cirium schedule data, the airline has 10,703 international departures planned between August and April 2027 across 81 routes serving Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. The milestone marks the fastest period of international growth in Southwest’s 55-year history.

Every one of those flights operates on a Boeing 737. The same aircraft that makes the three-hour run to Cancun is the aircraft Southwest would need to use for any further international expansion, including the 8 to 12 long-haul routes CEO Bob Jordan has said the airline could operate within five years. The 737 MAX 8 can reach the closest European airports from the US East Coast, but it carries 175 passengers in an all-economy cabin with no lie-flat seats and limited galley capacity.

What 100 Daily International Departures Looks Like For Southwest

Southwest exceeded 100 daily international departures for the first time in the airline’s history in the summer of 2026. According to Cirium schedule data, the carrier has 10,703 international departures planned between August 1, 2026, and April 5, 2027, across 81 international routes with five additional routes launching before the end of the schedule period. The previous peak was 93 daily international departures, a ceiling the airline had never broken in the 12 years since it began flying outside the United States.

Southwest’s international operation launched on July 1, 2014, with six routes: Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to Aruba, Montego Bay, and Nassau; Atlanta to Aruba and Montego Bay; and Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Montego Bay. The network grew slowly over the following decade, adding destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America one or two at a time. The acceleration in 2026, driven by new routes from Las Vegas, Nashville, Austin, and Columbus, pushed the daily count past 100 for the first time.

The milestone requires context. Southwest operates approximately 4,100 daily flights across nearly 800 Boeing 737s. International departures represent roughly 1 in every 45 of those flights. The airline carried about 3.9 million international passengers in 2025, a substantial figure in isolation but small relative to the carrier’s total domestic traffic. The 100 daily international departures are a record for Southwest, but it represents a carrier that remains overwhelmingly domestic and is building its international presence incrementally rather than launching a large-scale cross-border operation.

Where Southwest Flies Internationally & From Which Airports

Southwest’s international network covers Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America exclusively. The most-served international destination by departures is Cancun International Airport (CUN), which Southwest connects from multiple US airports and which generates the highest international passenger volume in the airline’s network. Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), Puerto Vallarta, Nassau, Montego Bay, Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), Belize City, Grand Cayman, Providenciales, and the Costa Rican airports at San José and Liberia round out the destination list. Every destination is a leisure market.

MCO and Houston Hobby Airport (HOU) are Southwest’s two largest international departure points by flight count. Both airports sit in large metropolitan areas with strong demand for beach and resort travel to Mexico and the Caribbean, and both connect to Southwest’s extensive domestic network, which funnels connecting passengers from dozens of inland US cities onto international departures. Las Vegas launched its first Southwest international service in June 2026 with flights to Cancun and Los Cabos, followed by Puerto Vallarta. Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) had been Southwest’s second-busiest airport overall by domestic departures but had never had international service from the carrier until this year.

The five new routes launching in the current schedule period originate from Las Vegas, Nashville, Austin, and Columbus. Puerto Vallarta service from Las Vegas begins November 1 on the 737-700. The remaining four routes launch in early 2027 on the 737 MAX 8. None of the originating airports is among Southwest’s top five international departure points, suggesting the airline is expanding its international footprint to new US cities rather than adding frequency on existing routes from established international bases. The net international route count grew by only one in the past year after accounting for seven routes removed during the same period, including Cancun service from Chicago O’Hare, an airport Southwest has since exited entirely.

Why The 737 Limits How Far Southwest Can Go

Every aircraft in Southwest’s fleet is a 737. The airline operates approximately 317 examples of the 737 MAX 8 alongside older 737-700s and 737-800s. The 737 MAX 8 has a published range of about 3,550 nautical miles (6,570 km) with 175 passengers, enough to reach any destination in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America from any airport in the continental US. It is not enough to reach most of Europe, South America south of the equator, or any destination in Asia from the US mainland.

The range limitation defines the boundary of Southwest’s current international network. The furthest destinations the airline serves, including San José in Costa Rica and Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos, are about 1,500-2,200 nautical miles (2,778-4,074 km) from their US departure points, well within the 737 MAX 8’s capability.

Southwest had planned to launch a Las Vegas to San José route that would have been its longest international service at approximately 2,700 nautical miles (5,000 km), but the route was canceled before it entered the schedule. Even that distance would have used less than 80% of the aircraft’s published range.

CEO Bob Jordan’s Long-Haul Ambition And What It Would Take

At the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference on May 28, Southwest CEO Bob Jordan stated that the airline could operate 8 to 12 long-haul international routes within the next five years. Jordan identified Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) as “a natural hopping-off point” for potential European service, noting that Southwest holds more than 70% market share at the airport with an average of 420 daily movements and a domestic network covering 78 destinations. The connectivity at BWI would be critical for filling aircraft on longer international routes with passengers originating from cities across the eastern United States.

The 737 MAX 8 can technically reach Iceland from BWI at about 2,500 nautical miles (4,630 km), the Azores at about 2,100 nautical miles (3,889 km), and potentially Shannon or Dublin in Ireland at about 2,900-3,000 nautical miles (5,371-5,556 km) under favorable wind conditions. London, Paris, and destinations deeper into continental Europe sit at 3,000-3,400 nautical miles (5,556-6,297 km) from BWI, which approaches the 737 MAX 8’s maximum range and would require payload restrictions on days with strong headwinds. The aircraft can reach the closest European airports. Whether it can do so with a full passenger load, full baggage, and adequate fuel reserves year-round is a different question.

Southwest’s pilot union, the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA), has a collective bargaining agreement that includes a re-opener clause triggered by expanded international operations, according to AirlineGeeks.com. SWAPA was notified in August 2025 that Southwest intends to operate more international flights using the 737 MAX, initiating negotiations over pay rates, duty time rules, and crew rest requirements for longer international sectors. Jordan acknowledged that the airline’s transformation program, which includes assigned seating, premium cabin sections, and airport lounges, needs to be substantially in place before transatlantic service makes sense. A passenger paying for a six-to seven-hour transatlantic flight expects a different product than a passenger on a two-hour domestic hop, and Southwest’s current cabin offering does not meet that expectation at those durations.

International Is Still 1% Of Southwest’s Operation

Southwest’s 100 daily international departures are approximately 2.4% of the carrier’s roughly 4,100 daily flights. The other 97.6% are domestic. Despite the record international flight count, the carrier’s cross-border operations generated about 3.9 million passengers in 2025, compared with a total system that carries over 175 million annually. The international network, while growing, remains a small addition to a domestic operation that spans nearly 800 aircraft and approximately 120 destinations across 43 states, Hawaii, and Alaska.

Near-term international growth focuses on adding routes and frequencies within the existing geographic footprint of Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America rather than expanding into new regions. The airline is being selective about where it flies internationally, targeting leisure markets with strong seasonal demand and limited nonstop competition from its specific departure airports. The approach is incremental rather than aggressive, building the international network one route at a time from airports where Southwest’s domestic connecting traffic can feed passengers onto the international departures.
