Fans of author Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach quadrilogy will be pleased to know that it’s not going to be a quadrilogy much longer. VanderMeer took to social media to tease the fifth and final book in the series, dubbed Abdication.

“Pleased to finally announce… Abdication, the last Southern Reach novel!” VanderMeer wrote on Bluesky. He also posted the following teaser text:

There will come the days of the watcher, the drowned woman and the shadow of a man who keeps falling apart with each step, but first comes the moment the birds appear at night from the gaps between the stars, far from home.

VanderMeer followed up that news with a photo of the manuscript’s table of contents page:

The Southern Reach series began with 2014’s Annihilation, which was quickly followed by the release of the sequels Authority and Acceptance. The series then continued in 2024 with Absolution. All four books revolve around the titular secret agency, which controls access to a remote, dangerous realm known as Area X.

Annihilation was famously adapted into a 2018 film directed by Alex Garland and starring Natalie Portman. In IGN’s Annihilation review, Jim Vejvoda wrote, “Annihilation isn’t always as consistently well-executed or involving as it might have been, and it’s told in a manner that robs the story of some much needed life-or-death suspense, but overall it’s a bold undertaking that doesn’t play it safe and features some strong performances.”

Abdication will be published by Macmillan Publishers and is scheduled for release on October 12, 2027. You can preorder a copy on Amazon.
