With the ‘Shrek’ franchise set to return to cinema screens for the first time since 2010 (not counting the ‘Puss in Boots’ movies), we’re also now learning of a confirmed release date for the spin-off focused on Eddie Murphy’s Donkey character.
The movie, which is in the works at DreamWorks Animation, will hit theaters on June 30, 2028.

Behind the camera are director Charlie Bean (‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’), co-director Matt Flynn (who has previously served as a story artist on the likes of ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ and producer Rebecca Huntley (‘The Bad Guys’).

What’s the story of ‘Donkey’?

There are not many official details on the spin-off film, but it’s reportedly going to be an origin story of how a donkey became Donkey. We expect lots of chatty chaos.
When will ‘Shrek 5’ be on our screens?
The fifth ‘Shrek’ outing (which also naturally features Murphy’s Donkey, alongside Zendaya playing Shrek and Fiona’s daughter), will be in theaters on June 30, 2027 –– a year later than originally promised.
