“She Was Rude To Her”: United Airlines Boots Passenger & Hearing-Impaired Wife After Conflict

An incident that occurred on a scheduled United Airlines flight in February is doing the rounds on social media, where it appears a United Airlines staff member kicked two passengers off the flight after becoming rude to a flight attendant. What makes the situation worse is that the passengers claim that one of the two who were removed was hearing impaired.

The situation unfolded when a passenger and his hearing-impaired wife were seated in first class, when an off-duty crew member said something to the hearing-impaired passenger. This led to a conflict when the crew member claimed she hadn’t listened. This led the gentleman to defend his wife, but the situation grew ruder by the second.

Tensions Boil Over As The Passenger ‘Didn’t Hear’

In the videos being shared, it shows that the couple is shown to be seated in their allocated first-class seat when the off-duty crew member got upset and suggested that the hearing impaired passenger was ignoring them. This led to the partner defending his wife and explaining that she had a hearing disability.

Instead of the situation being handled politely, the employee got even ruder and didn’t apologize as they then sat down. What followed was the on-duty crew members stepping in, and then what appeared to be the two individuals being asked to be removed from the service for using foul language.

Simple Flying reached out to United for comment, but the carrier did not immediately respond.

Conditions Of Carriage & Passenger Removal Rules

The passengers have repeatedly denied being rude or using foul language, with other passengers in the cabin supporting the couple. While the interaction between the employee and the passenger’s wife wasn’t captured on camera, the aftermath is shown. Posts on social media confirm that all customers were permitted to remain on the flight and eventually reached their destination withoutdelay. The airline has stressed that all customers are welcome onboard and are entitled to respect and courtesy.

United has strict conditions of carriage that allow the airline to remove or ban passengers for ‘red light’ behaviors. These include extreme intoxication or all types of aggression. Under Rule 21, this permits the Star Alliance carrier to refuse to transport or remove any passenger who threatens safety, behaves in a disorderly manner, or simply refuses to comply with crew instructions, which, in reviewing the footage of this recent incident, didn’t come close.

Violations of these rules set out in the conditions of carriage can lead to temporary or permanent bans for offenders. In extreme cases that result in delayed or canceled flights, the airline may also seek reimbursement for expenses incurred.

Support For Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing Passengers

United has a number of support services for deaf or hard-of-hearing passengers, and the carrier boasts that the world should be accessible for all. When planning your trip, it is encouraged to book via the United App or use a telecommunications device for the Deaf (TDD) by dialing 711.

At the airport, you can request special accessibility assistance, such as an escort to your gate, in addition to wheelchair access (if you want to use it, but not mandatory). When passing through security, you will be required to follow all standard processes as set for passengers and crew.

Onboard, you can choose a seat with an outlet, which is available in most economy or premium cabins. It is encouraged to let the crew know you are deaf or hard of hearing, and the crew will offer a customized safety briefing or ask if there are specific ways you would like to be communicated with. During special announcements, the crew will communicate with your preferred method. In-flight entertainment can come with closed captioning and subtitles.
