Sega’s “Super Game” has been cancelled, but revivals of classics like Crazy Taxi and Golden Axe are still moving forward

Sega’s latest financial report has confirmed the cancellation of the “Super Game” project it announced almost four years ago, as it tries to pivot away from live-service endeavours.

The “results presentation” highlights a number of positives, but live-service efforts like Sonic Rumble Party and the mobile games from Angry Birds creator Rovio – Angry Birds Bounce, Friends, and Dream Blast – have performed below expectations. As a direct result, over 100 developers who were working on free-to-play titles have been transferred to “full game” teams and Rovio will be restructured. The Super Game’s cancellation is quietly confirmed as part of the announcement, too.

“The ultimate goal in the ‘Super Game’ strategy is to create a game so revolutionary that it attracts far more active users than any of the Group’s games to date,” Sega CEO Haruki Satomi said back in 2022. The nature of the game was never quite clear, but the plan was to nurture a huge community of players and streamers.

The company claims to be “focusing on mainstay IPs” now, and it’s also confirmed the classic game revivals announced in 2023 are still alive and well. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Streets of Rage were all part of the effort to bring back veteran Sega franchises.

Last we heard, the new Crazy Taxi will supposedly be open-world and multiplayer. As for Jet Set Radio, the original game’s creators are reportedly involved. For now, these follow-ups “remain in production”, but no potential release windows have been shared.
