Scotland: Everton’s Alan Irvine stays on as Sebastien Pocognoli refreshes coaching staff

Everton assistant Alan Irvine will continue as part of a refreshed Scotland coaching staff under new boss Sebastien Pocognoli.

The former West Brom manager, who signed Belgian Pocognoli as a player during his brief stint at The Hawthorns in 2014, joined Steve Clarke’s national team set-up after Euro 2024.

Pocognoli was appointed Clarke’s successor last month and the Scottish FA have confirmed Irvine will be joined by two new faces, as well as goalkeeping coach Chris Woods, who was part of the previous regime.

Former Belgium coach Luke Benstead and Cameron Campbell, who worked in both Aberdeen and Rangers’ academies before joining RB Leipzig in 2024 as their head of player development, have also been appointed as assistants to Pocognoli.

Campbell, 35, became Tottenham Hotspur’s first-team individual development coach last year, while former Everton and Manchester United analyst Benstead was appointed Istanbul Basaksehir’s assistant manager 12 months ago.

With Pocognoli’s backroom team now in place, the former Monaco and Union St-Gilloise boss will name his first Scotland squad on Tuesday before his maiden camp.

Two Nations League fixtures against Slovenia come either side of encounters with Switzerland and North Macedonia during an extended international period.

“It was important for me to assemble the right backroom staff at the start of this new challenge,” said Pocognoli. “I took my time and did my research, and I’m delighted with the group we have.

“I am really pleased that Alan didn’t hesitate in agreeing to stay on. His passion for the role is obvious, as is his quality on the training pitch. He has the respect of everyone who has worked with him.

“I was very impressed by Cameron Campbell when I met him, and the recommendations I have received on him from trusted contacts in the English Premier League and in Germany, has been outstanding. It is a bonus that Cameron is Scottish.

“Luke was known to me from his time in Belgium, where he has worked with some big talents in his seven years with the national team. He has such a rounded skillset, having worked as a performance analyst then as an assistant coach at the highest level, with that added responsibility for set-pieces, which he will continue with Scotland. His enthusiasm to join this exciting project really stood out.

“The same applies to Chris Woods. Not only on the back of a standout playing career, where he played international football, but for his expertise as a goalkeeping coach working with some excellent goalkeepers.”
