S&P/TSX composite down more than 200 points, oil up after latest U.S.-Iran attacks

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 200 points in late-morning trading as the price of oil pushed higher following the latest attacks between the U.S. and Iran.

The October crude oil contract was up US$3.36 at US$96.39 per barrel as the U.S. military said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in response to the latest attacks on its warships.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 222.47 points at 35,900.58.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 428.35 points at 52,357.72. The S&P 500 index was down 38.65 points at 7,634.87, while the Nasdaq composite was down 180.67 points at 26,240.74.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.37 cents US compared with 72.55 cents US on Tuesday.

The December gold contract was down US$8.20 at US$4,430.80 an ounce.
