If you thought it was game over for Mother Brain, you might want to keep reading because Ubisoft is reportedly resurrecting the AI antagonist, just not in the way you might have expected.

As reported by Stephen Totilo of Game File, “Motherbrain” is actually a trademark and term Ubisoft is now using to refer to its AI projects.

Kotaku further notes how one “Motherbrain” trademark filing refers to “downloadable computer software using artificial intelligence (AI) for creating video games and interactive content”, and another lists “analyzing data for interacting with humans”.

For now, there’s no public notice about this, and the term “Motherbrain” is only being used “internally” at Ubisoft.

This isn’t the third-party company’s first time experimenting with AI. It previously announcing an AI tool back in 2023 to help developers write dialogue for its games. And in 2024, it announced its new generative AI prototype “NEO NPC”, which used GenAI to “prod at the limits of how a player can interact with an NPC”.

Unsurprisingly, this latest discovery is already getting some attention from the Metroid community. Some Phantasy Star fans are also raising their eyebrows at the familiar name. Currently, there’s no evidence this term is a direct reference to certain series, games…or video game bosses.
