Psychonauts, Kiln studio Double Fine votes to unionise

Psychonauts studio, Double Fine, is set to unionise with the Communications Workers of America (CWA).

Workers from the developer petitioned to form the union at the end of last week, following in the footsteps of several other Microsoft-owned studios that have formed unions with the CWA. A total of 42 full- and part-time employees voted in favour of the decision.

“On 7th May, the workers at Microsoft studio Double Fine Productions announced their decision to form a union with CWA to preserve and extend the studio’s commitments to creative excellence, diversity and inclusion, and worker quality of life,” CWA told Aftermath.

“In tandem with requesting voluntary recognition from the company, workers have also filed an election petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to secure union representation.

“We appreciate that Microsoft has taken a neutral approach and agreed not to interfere in any way with workers’ rights to organise unions.”

This is not, of course, the first Microsoft studio to unionise. Employees at Doom studio id Software similarly voted in favour of union representation with the CWA back in December.

The CWA also negotiated a new contract with ZeniMax Media staff at Microsoft that set “new standards for the industry” last May.
