Open-world action RPG Outward 2 sets summer early access release with a “potato specs” gameplay trailer starring a talking tuber

As strange as it was, the first Outward managed to sell over 1m copies and build a solid following. With Outward 2, developer Nine Dots Studio, which is now self-publishing the game, aims to improve on that start and now we have a release date for the new open-world action RPG.

Outward 2 will be released in early access on 7th July on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG – there’s no console release for now. To celebrate the occasion, Nine Dots released a new trailer detailing the game’s “potato specs” – a humorous nod to the fact it’ll run on old machines.

Though we’d already seen Outward 2 in its quirky glory before, this remains an unexpected marketing choice, though one that could help get more eyes on the off-beat RPG. With a “Fryzen 5 CPU” and “8 Gigabites YAM”, the trailer shows the game working “buttery smooth” on the lowest, presumably potato quality settings, if you’re willing to sacrifice most of the visual flourishes.

Jokes aside, it’s good news for those using older PC hardware, and the full specs rundown below makes it clear that anyone using 2014-era components can play the game fine. Running ultra settings at 4K will demand a higher-end graphics card and CPU, though, obviously.

If you’re not familiar with Outward 2, you’re “an average Joe” on an open adventure in a living world full of mystery and menaces. There’s two-player local split-screen co-op – hooray! – and online multiplayer available from the get-go. It’s dangerous to go alone!
