Nintendo Zelda Direct live report – the big news from today’s 40th anniversary showcase

The first of two Nintendo Direct showcases airs today, this one themed around The Legend of Zelda, which turned 40 years old this year. And we’ll be covering it live, right here, as it happens.

The show starts 3pm UK time and lasts for roughly 30 minutes, Nintendo has said, and contains “a variety of The Legend of Zelda-related information about the series’ 40th anniversary”. Exactly what that means, we don’t yet know, but we can make a couple of educated guesses.

Guess number one: a release date and proper reveal for the Ocarina of Time remake. We’ve only had a glimpse at the game so far – a glimpse that proved controversial for its more realistic art style – and while we’ve been told it’s releasing this year, we don’t know when. The suggestion is that the Ocarina of Time remake could launch near or alongside GTA 6 in mid-November, which so far, no other game has dared to do.

We also expect a proper trailer for The Legend of Zelda film – which is due out next year and production is under way on – plus potentially a Switch port or remaster of classic Zelda adventures Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. We may even get the long whispered-about Oracle of Seasons/Ages GBA games in the new-but-retro style of Link’s Awakening. Perhaps the legendary SNES game A Link to the Past could be given the same treatment. And dare we hope for a glimpse at the next fully fledged Zelda game?

All of that plus probably some amiibos, maybe a limited edition Zelda-themed Switch 2 design, and a look at the series’ history. There’s actually quite a lot to be excited about.
