After years of wearing sustainable jewelry brands, I’m sharing my personal favorites for ethical, quality pieces at a variety of price points for gifting or for yourself. 💍
Despite loving the idea of wearing jewelry, I historically haven’t managed to put it on in the morning. Since I don’t like sleeping in it and I don’t like bracelets and rings clanking on the computer as I work, it only makes it out of my jewelry box for special occasions.
But something always seems to be missing from my personal style. I wear mostly basics, and my wardrobe is begging for some accessories to make it feel interesting. Everyone who has a sense of style I admire seems to have a unique signature stack of necklaces, rings, or earrings dialed. It’s like these pieces become a part of them, adding a layer of personality to everything they wear. And I do really like this look and wonder how it could pull my outfits together.
“As I’ve been building out my jewelry collection, I’ve been thinking about the meaning and power of wearing natural precious materials.”
When I got the chance to test 11 ethical jewelry brands and build out my own stacks, I jumped on it. It was rare to experiment across so many different brands and styles all at once. And after trying on so many pieces, I was surprised by what I ended up loving — gravitating towards more whimsical and colorful pieces rather than just classics. When I found jewelry that I actually loved, wearing them all day — even to bed — was way less annoying than I expected. And my personal style is definitely coming together because of it.
As I’ve been building out my jewelry collection, I’ve been thinking about the meaning and power of wearing natural precious materials — gold, diamonds, gems, and stones. Adorning yourself is one of the most ancient human experiences there is. And my friend Sarah Perlis, a jewelry designer featured below, has taught me about the intentionality and sacred experience that jewelry can hold. She believes that nature is our greatest teacher, and that we can wear these gems as a “reminder of who we truly are — luminous, unique, sparkling.”
I like that idea. Making jewelry a part of your self-love ritual, choosing pieces with intention, letting them become talismans for everyday wear.
My daily stack after testing:
After genuinely wearing and testing all the pieces listed below to sleep, to shower, working from home, Pilates, dinners, and even to a wedding, here are my favorites — my everyday stack — either all together or mixed and matched!

Our criteria & methodology:
Our team has fallen in love with dozens of ethical and sustainable jewelry brands over the years. For this review, we pooled together our experience to select brands, and I put all of them to the test. For months, I tried pieces from each of the brands — wearing them to work, out on the town, to workout classes, and even in the shower and to bed.
Below, I’ve ranked my favorites based on how well they stand up to daily wear, as well as giving them points for style, originality, and affordability. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet our criteria below.
- SUSTAINABLY SOURCED MATERIALS | Each of these sustainable jewelry brands prioritizes the use of recycled metals, conflict-free diamonds, and responsibly sourced gemstones, including noting their traceability, provenance, and origins where available.
- QUALITY/DURABLE | We’ve tested and can confirm that each of these jewelry items are made with high quality materials, can be worn on the daily, and will stand the test of time.
- ETHICAL | We’re carefully selected jewelry brands that follow ethical practices, including fair labor, fair trade, and the Kimberley Process.
- AFFORDABLE | We’ve included brands on the list that are fairly priced at an accessible price point that reflects the true quality of the pieces.
Each one of these ethical brands does incredible work — whether it’s sustainably ending cycles of poverty through employment, upholding traditional craft techniques, or sourcing fair-mined gold and other materials, there’s a jewelry brand here that matches your values.

1. Brilliant Earth
Best For | Conflict-free gemstones
Ethics & Sustainability | FSC-certified sustainable packaging, traceable diamonds, recycled precious metals, gives back to various causes
Product Range | Engagement rings, wedding rings, rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, men’s jewelry
Price Range | $95 (pearl pendant necklace)–$75,000 (diamond pendant necklace)
Brilliant Earth has a history of ethical and sustainable practices, making it a TGT staple for when we really want to splurge on a piece of jewelry. The brand was one of the first jewelers to provide traceability of a diamond’s origin and ownership, and to offer blockchain-enabled diamonds at scale — you won’t have any trouble tracing the provenance of your Brilliant Earth diamonds. Their provenance claims for natural diamonds, recycled gold, and recycled diamonds are independently audited and verified, so you know you’re getting the real deal! While rings are a popular go-to, Brilliant Earth’s necklaces are perfect for layering with formal or everyday wear.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: Ever since high school, my daily earrings have been gold hoops – so I knew I wanted to include some in the ethical jewelry guide. Brilliant Earth’s 4mm Medium Perfect Gold Hoops are my new favorite. They’re super lightweight and clip on instead of using a back, which means they won’t fall out, something I’ve dealt with in the past. They’re made of repurposed precious metals, 14k gold, and truly look high-end. I want them in every size.
I also fell in love with the Mini Sun Lab Diamond Medallion necklace. It’s perfect for stacking with other chains, and the sun reminds me to shine my light each day. The chain adjusts to 16, 17, or 18 inches. It feels precious but not so delicate that I can’t sleep, shower, or work out in it. Both pieces make great gifts, and the prices feel fair for the quality.

We love the endless stone options and unique wedding band styles you won’t find anywhere else.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: Historically, my jewelry box has been mostly simple gold and diamond pieces – so I was excited to test some colored gems. The Sol Emerald Octagonal Pendant made its way into my everyday necklace stack immediately. I loved the pop of green — emeralds represent love, rebirth, and wisdom. It works perfectly for layering or makes a statement on its own, and the chain is adjustable from 14, 16, or 18 inches long.
I also tested the Half-Moon Black Jade Studs in Yellow Gold. These delicate studs are crafted from reclaimed 14kt yellow gold with black jade inlay. They’re really cool and would be perfect for a second or third piercing. Honestly, I only have single piercings, so these aren’t my everyday go-to on their own since I like something that makes more of a statement — but they’re beautiful, and I can see them working for the right stack.
I also checked out Bario Neal’s ring collection: A braided gold band and a Channel Blue Sapphire Narrow Band. Both are delicate and thin, perfect for ring stacking if that’s your style. These feel like investments, but the quality and craftsmanship are undeniable.

3. Sarah Perlis
Best For | Handmade, spiritual jewelry with intention

Product Range | Necklaces, earrings, chains, rings, engagement jewelry
Price Range | $350 (bands)–$10,000+ (custom jewelry)

Her approach is rooted in the belief that jewelry can be a vessel for healing and personal power. She specializes in custom pieces and engagement rings, co-creating with clients to bring their vision to life. These are pieces you’ll wear forever and pass down — personal talismans that become part of your story.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: I know Sarah personally and have been admiring her work for a while – but getting to wear and experience her pieces in person has been a real treat. Every single piece is handmade. She hand-hammers every link on her gold chains, and you can absolutely tell. The quality craftsmanship really stands out against manufactured pieces and feels like a true luxury.
Her heart collection — the necklace charms and earrings — is hand-cut and hammered, giving them this beautiful, organic, dynamic look. Sarah is so intentional about which gemstones she uses, and the opal and moonstone on these necklaces are truly stunners. They feel powerful and radiant, and call me every day to put them on.
There’s just a different feel when pieces are truly made by hand. Sarah’s work has a spiritual quality to it – you can feel the care and intention. These are some of my favorites from the entire guide. I’m actually having her make a custom chain and hearts for my mom because they feel so special.

4. Catori Life
Best For | Jewelry inspired by nature

Every item is mindfully made in the USA, with every worker receiving fair wages. Catori Life even supports several grassroots organizations, including The Eden Project, which plants 10 trees with every piece of jewelry purchased.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: I’ve wanted a snake ring for a while, so I was excited to test the Stoned Serpent diamond ring in gold. The open design makes it comfortable for everyday wear — especially on my pointer finger. I’ve been wearing it constantly, and it doesn’t bother me while typing or working. The champagne diamonds sparkle, and the serpent symbolism resonates with me: Transformation and shedding what no longer serves. It feels like a daily reminder to keep making space for what’s new.
I also loved the Gitana Hoops in Silver. I usually go for gold, but these don’t give me a headache like other silver pieces. They’re lightweight and have this sculptural form that frames your face without being too much. They’re made from recycled sterling silver and truly feel like a forever investment. They’re high quality and stand out without feeling like generic hoops.

5. Holden
Best For | Lab-grown diamond rings, engagement & wedding jewelry
Ethics & Sustainability | Recycled precious metals, lab-grown diamonds, Climate Label Certified since 2021, gender-neutral jewelry, donates 1% of sales to The Trevor Project

Since 2018, they’ve been challenging traditional jewelry shopping with their lab-grown diamonds and recycled metals. Each piece is guaranteed for a lifetime, so they’re designed to stand the test of time. As a Climate Label Certified company, they’ve been measuring and offsetting their carbon emissions since 2021 while also donating 1% of all sales to The Trevor Project.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: Stunning and so sparkly!! I gasped when I opened the box. I’m currently wearing The Round Diamond Studs — they are delicate with a beautiful 4-prong setting that’s beveled down at the bottom, making them really comfortable to wear. The 1.0 ct lab-grown diamonds feel like a forever investment: The kind you only need to buy once. Gold posts, timeless design, an instant classic! I am planning to gift some to my best friend for her wedding!
I’m also eying the Corridor Signet: That east-west baguette placement is stunning, and the squared face with smoothed edges gives it a modern edge. Same gorgeous beveled detail. Both pieces are handcrafted in NYC and come with Holden’s lifetime guarantee, so they’re genuinely made to last.

6. Kinn
Best For | Everyday luxury pieces, tennis bracelets
Ethics & Sustainability | Recycled 14k gold, ethically sourced gemstones, Climate Label Certified production, KinnCycle® recycling program, AAPI female-founded & led
Product Range | Tennis bracelets, earrings (studs, huggies, hoops), necklaces, rings, engagement rings, charm collections
Price Range | $50 (stud earrings)–$8,980 (tennis necklace)
Kinn is an AAPI female-founded brand by Jennie Yoon, created to design modern heirlooms — pieces designed to last a lifetime and be passed down through generations. Each piece is handcrafted from solid recycled 14k gold with ethically sourced, sustainably produced gemstones. The brand philosophy centers on jewelry as a “second skin” piece you wear every day, in every moment, so they become woven into your story.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: Kinn actually makes luxury pieces feel accessible. Tennis bracelets? I always thought wistfully, ‘maybe one day when I’m mega rich.’ But their lab-grown diamond pieces are stunning and reasonably priced. The Sofia Marquise Shaped Tennis Bracelet is gorgeous: Marquise-cut diamonds alternating down the bracelet in solid 14k gold, creating movement and sparkle without the weight. It looks expensive because it is, but it doesn’t feel out of reach.
I also tested two huggie earrings: The Ynez Dome Huggies and the Cosette Huggies. Both are super comfortable and snap into place, so they won’t fall off. I wore everything to a wedding and got endless compliments. People kept asking where I got it all — I felt like a total queen.

7. Mejuri
Best For | Responsibly sourced & recycled gold
Ethics & Sustainability | Ethically sourced metals & stones, RJC certified responsibly sourced or recycled gold, fair labor, gives back to BIPOC & nonbinary communities
Product Range | Earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, engagement jewelry, men’s jewelry, pet jewelry
Price Range | $48 (chain bracelet)–$7,100 (diamond tennis necklace)
Mejuri doesn’t want you to just wear your fine jewelry on special occasions; the brand wants you to wear it every day. Shop here for rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets handcrafted by specialty jewelers in Italy, India, South Korea, and more — without the traditional luxury markups. The materials include cultured freshwater pearls, genuine mineral stones, and diamonds that are ethically sourced from suppliers who follow conflict-free practices. And did we mention it’s all gorgeous?
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: Not your grandma’s pearls. The Kai Pearl Collar works just as well with a T-shirt on a casual day as it does at Easter brunch. It’s made from 91% recycled sterling silver with 100% traceable pearls — the kind of piece that lasts a lifetime. Hypoallergenic, super durable, and honestly, pearls feel way more youthful than they used to.
I also tested the Lab Grown Sapphire Orbit Necklace. It’s a gorgeous layering piece for everyday — the sapphires shimmer beautifully. But I have one big complaint: The stones are only on one side, so the necklace constantly flips. It’s nearly impossible to keep them facing the right way, which is frustrating because the design is so pretty when it’s sitting correctly.

8. Etsy
Best For | Hand-crafted by artisans
Ethics & Sustainability | Powered by renewable energy, sustainable & upcycled finds, carbon-offset shipping
Product Range | Earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, anklets, engagement rings, wedding rings, baby & child jewelry, men’s jewelry, pet jewelry, body jewelry
Price Range | Varies by seller
Etsy is the place to go if you’re looking for something unique that also supports small businesses. While it can feel a little overwhelming to hunt through the large marketplace, a little patience can have a huge payoff if you’re looking for something truly special. Everything from diamond heirloom jewelry to handmade artisan pieces from non-traditional materials can be found here; we love the engaging sellers who will work with us to get our order exactly right. Bonus: Shops are based worldwide, and Etsy offers carbon-offset shipping!
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: I love Etsy because there are so many incredible makers to choose from. The selection is basically infinite, but these two pieces stood out.
The Carnelian Barque Pearl Necklace was exactly what I was looking for — something beaded with real statement energy. Natural red carnelian beads, a freshwater baroque pearl, and freshwater rice pearls by the clasp. All the findings (clasp, jump rings, wire) are 14k gold fill or sterling silver, so the color won’t wear off, and it’s waterproof and sweatproof. It works with a summer dress on vacation or thrown over a tee to dress it up.
Then I also loved the Wellspring Necklace from Paige Devlin. Paige is a self-taught metalsmith based in the Methow Valley working with reclaimed gold and diamonds — she actually mined Montana sapphires herself, so you know the ethical sourcing is real. She uses an ancient sand casting technique to make each piece raw and original. The organic texture of the sandcast 14k recycled gold with the reclaimed diamond is stunning. The pendant has this natural, unpolished quality that feels precious but organic. Feels genuinely high quality and handmade.

9. CLED
Best For | Fun statement pieces
Ethics & Sustainability | Upcycled Eco Gems from discarded glass, recycled precious metals, handmade in Los Angeles, conscious lifecycle design, plastic-free packaging
Product Range | Necklaces, rings, earrings, ear cuffs, bracelets, charm collections, customizable pieces
Price Range | $35 (charm)–$320 (necklace)
CLED transforms discarded glass into jewelry through its signature Eco Gem™ technology. Founded on the belief that sustainable fashion doesn’t sacrifice style, they handcraft modern pieces in their LA studio that balance edgy design with environmental responsibility. Each collection tells a story: from the unity symbolism of the Loop collection to the prismatic beauty of Rays of Light: Prism to the organic growth energy of Beginning to Unfold: Legume.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: CLED has fun, modern, edgy pieces that add real statement to any outfit… a different vibe than the other brands I tried. The Sculptural Small Charm Necklace is made from discarded glass on a black waxed cotton cord with a sterling silver setting. I love wearing it solo — the black thread balances masculine and feminine energy perfectly.
The Bean Toggle Necklace has organic, legume-inspired curves, and I opted for the green glass — it reminds me of sea glass! The 16-inch chain has more of a choker feel. Silver isn’t usually my go-to, but I wanted to try something new and couldn’t pass up this piece: It’s a real outfit-maker. The Core Loop Ring and Beam Ear Cuff were super cool too – though I found myself reaching for the necklaces the most.

10. Quince
Best For | Affordable fine jewelry
Ethics & Sustainability | Ethically sourced metals & stones from RJC members, recycled gold, some pieces made in the USA
Product Range | Earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, diamond jewelry
Price Range | $38 (threader earrings)–$6,900 (diamond tennis necklace)
For justly priced fine jewelry made with real gold, look no further than Quince. Known for their affordable luxury pieces, Quince’s jewelry is here to leave a lasting impression. We love how the brand provides the specifics on where each precious metal and stone is sourced, and also how pricing compares to other popular brands! Quince keeps its costs low by cutting out the middlemen — all while sourcing their jewelry from Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC) members who advocate and ensure ethical supply chain practices are utilized at all stages of operation.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: I went for true classics from Quince: The diamond studs and paperclip chain. Both are beautiful, high-quality pieces made with 14K gold and lab-grown diamonds. The studs are 2 carats total (1 carat each), IGI certified, with excellent cut and VS2 clarity. If you didn’t know they were from Quince, you’d assume they came from a luxury jeweler.
The paperclip chain is a bestseller for a reason: The elongated interlock design is modern and clean. I’ve got it in 16 inches and wear it constantly… part of my daily stack! Both pieces would be a solid investment for yourself or a perfect gift for someone. At these prices with their 365-day return policy, there probably isn’t a better deal.

11. GLDN
Best For | Personalized birthstone jewelry
Ethics & Sustainability | Handmade in La Conner, WA studio with living-wage jobs and benefits, 90% recycled metals, 95% domestically sourced materials, 10% of profits donated to charitable organizations, 70% made-to-order (near-zero waste), free repairs up to 6 months (up to 3 years for solid gold)
Product Range | Birthstone rings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, charm necklaces, personalized pieces, custom orders
Price Range | $48 (stud earrings)–$1,498 (cuff bracelet); birthstone pieces typically $78–$200
GLDN is a female-founded brand by Chrissy with over 10 years of handcrafted jewelry making. They believe in jewelry as “second skin”—pieces you wear every day that become woven into your story. 90% of pieces are made in their studio; everything is intentional, personalized, and designed to last a lifetime.
Grace’s Picks:
Grace’s Review: GLDN is definitely the most affordable brand. It feels very giftable! The Gold Grand Baguette Ring is gorgeous — I love that you can choose your birthstone — or not! Mine is April, so instead of choosing a neutral, I opted for a colorful stone. It’s 18k gold vermeil with a 6x4mm baguette stone, and it’s delicate enough to stack or wear solo.
The Leaflet Hoops work perfectly for single piercings or seconds. The gemstone drop makes them feel extra special. Lightweight and easy for everyday.
The Toi et Moi Necklace is my favorite concept: Two birthstone charms on one 14k gold vermeil chain that you can customize however you want. Layer them, swap them out, make it yours.

Frequently asked questions about ethical & sustainable jewelry:
Why consider sustainable jewelry?
Sustainable jewelry supports ethical sourcing, minimizes environmental impact, and promotes a more responsible jewelry industry by avoiding conflict minerals and supporting fair labor practices. Rather than resorting to mined minerals, sustainable jewelry brands use recycled precious metals, like gold and silver, which reduces the demand for new mining and lessens environmental disruption. Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones are also used, which offer an ethical, lower-impact alternative to mined stones (they’re nearly identical to natural stones but come with a smaller carbon footprint and without the social and environmental issues of traditional mining).
Sustainable brands also focus on reducing waste and pollution by adopting eco-friendly production methods and packaging. With every purchase of sustainably-made jewelry, you’re contributing to an overall shift toward a more transparent and eco-conscious jewelry market.
What makes jewelry ethical?
Choosing sustainable jewelry is an important decision as conventional jewelry production is often linked to unethical work practices and environmental concerns. The traditional mining of metals and gemstones has funded armed conflicts and unsafe, exploitative labor conditions. There are also several environmental impacts that mining contributes to, including water pollution and soil degradation.
With every purchase of sustainably-made jewelry, you’re contributing to an overall shift toward a more transparent and eco-conscious jewelry market.
On the flip side, ethical and sustainable jewelry brands take a more mindful and transparent approach. They prioritize conflict-free materials, ensuring that gemstones and diamonds are sourced in ways that do not fund violence or human rights abuses. Many brands also adopt fair labor practices, supporting safe working conditions, fair wages, and respect for workers’ rights throughout the supply chain. Certifications such as Fair Trade help verify these commitments, while initiatives like the Kimberley Process aim to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the global market.
Ethical jewelry also often incorporates recycled metals, lab-grown diamonds, or responsibly sourced gems to minimize environmental harm and reduce the demand for destructive mining. You’ll notice that many sustainable brands value artisan craftsmanship and small-scale production, working directly with local communities to preserve traditional techniques while ensuring fair compensation.
By choosing ethical jewelry, your conscious decision supports conflict-free sourcing, dignified labor, and environmentally responsible practices — helping to create a more just and sustainable jewelry industry.
Sustainable materials to look for:
- Recycled metals: Gold, silver, and platinum that are reclaimed and repurposed help reduce the need for destructive new mining.
- Fairmined or Fairtrade gold: Certified gold sourced from responsible small-scale mines that meet strict social, environmental, and labor standards.
- Conflict-free diamonds: Diamonds verified through the Kimberley Process or sourced from suppliers with transparent, traceable supply chains.
- Lab-grown diamonds & gemstones: Chemically and visually identical to mined stones, but created with a smaller environmental footprint.
- Recycled or reclaimed gemstones: Vintage or repurposed gems give new life to existing resources.
- Ethically sourced natural gemstones: Mined under fair labor conditions with minimal environmental impact, often from small-scale or artisan miners.
- Alternative sustainable materials: Pearls, wood, shells, ceramics, or other responsibly sourced natural materials offer a unique, eco-friendly touch.
How to care for your jewelry by metal & stone:
- Solid Gold: Solid gold is made to last, but it can still get scratched over time. Clean it with warm water, a little dish soap, and a soft cloth, and store it separately to help prevent everyday wear.
- Gold Vermeil & Gold-Plated: These pieces need a little extra TLC. Take them off before showering, swimming, or working out, and avoid contact with lotions, sunscreen, and perfume. Give them a quick wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to help preserve the finish.
- Sterling Silver: It’s completely normal for sterling silver to tarnish over time. A polishing cloth will bring back its shine, and storing it in an airtight pouch or jewelry box can help slow tarnishing.
- Platinum: Platinum is incredibly durable, making it a great choice for everyday wear. It may develop a soft patina over time, but you can easily clean it with warm, soapy water or have it professionally polished if you’d like it to shine like new.
- Stainless Steel: One of the lowest-maintenance metals out there. Wash it with mild soap and water, dry it well, and you’re good to go.
- Pearls: Pearls are a little more delicate than other gemstones. Put them on last after your skincare and perfume, wipe them with a soft cloth after wearing, and store them separately to help prevent scratches.
- Opals: Opals don’t love heat, harsh chemicals, or sudden temperature changes. Clean them gently with a damp cloth, and try to keep them away from prolonged water exposure.
- Diamonds: Even diamonds can lose their sparkle from everyday buildup. A quick soak in warm, soapy water and a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush will keep them looking their best.
- Gemstones: Most gemstones can be cleaned with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush. If you’re caring for softer stones like emeralds, skip harsh cleaners and handle them a little more gently.
